New York Mets Jose Reyes runs to first base at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThere were a couple of big season debuts for the Mets today: Oliver Perez made his first start of the season and Jose Reyes returned from the disabled list. It’s still hard to believe that it’s been nearly a year since Reyes played in a game.

Perez looked just like he has over the last few seasons. His pitches were all over the place while occasionally displaying strikeout ability. Here’s the breakdown of the game:

  • The Good– Reyes came back and went 1 for 4, the bullpen had 3.1 innings scoreless, Jeff Francouer went 2 for 4 (.444 on the season)
  • The Bad – Willie Harris robbed the Mets again closing out the game on a diving catch of a line drive by Rod Barajas
  • The Ugly– Perez gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in 5.2 IP, David Wright made his second error in five games

New York Mets Angel Pagan reaches first base in the second inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsAll spring long Jerry Manuel talked about the need to get out to a good start this season. This wasn’t the way to do it, losing a series at home to the Marlins. It’s really disappointing to see. The keys to the game were:

  • No offense- The Mets only had 7 hits and Angel Pagan and Jeff Francoeur combined for 4 of them
  • Jon Niese- He pitched pretty well going 6 IP giving up 3 ER, but not good enough to get a win

The Nationals come to town tomorrow for a three game series which is critical that the Mets take, if it can be critical in April. What a bad way for the Mets to start the season…

Mets Send A Message To NL “We Came To Play”!

Florida Marlins at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsOk, my prediction on my last post was dead wrong and I’m so glad it was!

Even though I wasn’t one of the many lucky Mets fans who attended opening day, I was not even one of the lucky Met fans who was able to play hooky from work to watch at home. I did end up listening to the game on WFAN and what I heard made me smile.

Right from the beginning this seemed to be a whole new team! David Wright’s first at-bat is a homer! Johan Santana gets an immediate two-run lead and never gives it up as I expected. Twitter was going absolutely crazy as was my phone. Very hard to get work done…

It’s great to be in a meeting and know your team is winning opening day and twitter is giving me the recap. I can’t help but laugh and yes, the boss looks over and wonder’s “What’s so funny!?

Quick twitter recap – One minute Wright is the home run leader, the next he’s tied with Albert Pujols, a few minutes later Pujols is the league leader again. Phillies fans are tweeting with a #mets hashtag, “Halladay is dealing what was that about Johan Santana being the best pitcher in the NL East?” “#Phillies are striking fear into the hearts of the #Mets #Cards#Dodgers and #Yankees“.  Baseball is back but now it’s interactive! Following baseball on twitter is too much fun!

Hey Phillies Fans…No fear on our end!

Mets 4 – Cubs 1 Aug. 30, 2009

The Mets avoided the sweep in Chicago on the back of Nelson Figueroa. He pitched into the eighth inning with 10 strikeouts and only allowing 1 earned run. He’s auditioning for someone for next season and really put on a show today. It still surprises me that they don’t give Figueroa a shot at the long man job out of the bullpen. I’d rather see him on the roster than someone like Tim Redding next season.

The offense was somewhat potent with 12 hits including 3 by Angel Pagan. Although the Mets only managed 1 extra base hit, a triple by Anderson Hernandez. The wind was blowing in today and the Cubs didn’t have any extra base hits.

The Mets are off tomorrow and start a series in Colorado on Tuesday night with David Wright back in the lineup.

SAN FRANCISCO - MAY 16: Bobby Parnell #39 of ...

The Mets got their brains beat in on national TV by the underachieving Cubs today. The biggest culprit was Bobby Parnell getting ripped in his third consecutive start. Today he gave up 8 runs in 4.2 innings. He’s not fooling anyone with his weak slider that only appears to break about half of the time he throws it.

The Mets managed 9 hits but only two were for extra bases. Those were only doubles by Jeff Francoeur and Brian Schneider. Although Schneider had a 2 for 4 day and raised his season average to .188.

The game was over in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Cubs scored 6 including a grand slam by Jake Fox. All of the runs were on Parnell.

We did get our first look at Lance Broadway today. He was acquired from the White Sox in the Ramon Castro deal. He gave up 2 runs in 3 innings of mop-up duty to finish off the blowout game.

The Mets have lost the first two games of the series in Chicago. They try to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.

CHICAGO - AUGUST 28: Pitcher Pat Misch #48 of ...

The Mets and Cubs were tied 1-1 after the first two innings. Pat Misch pitched an unbelievable game too. He went 7 strong innings only allowing the 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks.

The Mets took a 2-1 lead on a double off the wall in left by Fernando Tatis in the eighth. But the bottom of the inning was a disaster for Brian Stokes. And he’s been pitching so well lately. He gave up 3 hits and a walk while only getting one out. One of those hits was a 3-run bomb by Alfonso Soriano. That was the game.

The Mets and Cubs play two more day games over the weekend.

Giants 10 – Mets 1 Aug. 17, 2009

Livan Hernandez

The Mets got smacked around by the Giants in the final game of the four game series to earn a split. The big news is that David Wright and Billy Wagner were both in the dugout with the team, although they’re headed in different directions.

Also big news, Livan Hernandez actually made it out of the first inning without giving up a run. But he ended up going 5.1 innings and giving up 6 runs on 11 hits and a walk. Tim Redding also got bombed in the eighth inning giving up 3 more runs on 4 hits.

The Mets weak offense reared its ugly head again with the team only able to come up with 8 hits and 4 walks. Only one of those hits was for extra bases, a double by Daniel Murphy.

The Braves come to town for a series starting tomorrow night.
