iPhone Baseball App Review – Fan Misery Index

The perfect iPhone app for Mets fans! The Fan Misery Index app has real-time updates that will give statistical reference to our shared misery as Mets fans.

If you’re a Met’s fan who carries an iPhone then this app was made just for you. This little app, called FMI or FanMiseryIndex.com, should come in handy as the season progresses. The app costs $2.99 and as a bonus, you can follow the Metsreport.com feed right from the app. I highly recommend it. Check out the slideshow. It’s 25 screenshots that explain what statistics are available and since it’s a dynamic content application the statistics are updated in real time.

From the company site:

“Fanmisery.com has created a mathematical method that calculates the FanMisery.com Index (FMI) based on relative strengths of a set of statistics and opinions. The FMI is conceptually similar to the S&P 500 Index or the Dow Jones Industrial Average – it’s a calculated value between 0 and 10 where 0 indicates bliss and 10 represents the ultimate misery that you could ever envision.”

Last year, as the Yankees were playing the Phillies in the World Series the Mets FMI probably would have been pinned at 10!

Mets Should Add John Smoltz For 2010

John Smoltz

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post by Nick Migliore. Nick is a big-time Mets fan and frequent commenter here and on other Mets fan sites. It’s great to have him making a contribution that should add some diversity to the perspective on the Mets from other posts that are on this site. You can follow Nick on Twitter.

First and foremost, I’m glad to be part of The Mets Report! Thanks again to Dave Doyle for the opportunity to write for this site. I’m a huge Mets fan, and to give you a heads up about my writings, I tend to rely on more in-depth stats than just the standard ERA, win-loss records, batting average, etc. I hope everyone enjoys my contributions. If you have any questions or comments feel free to drop a comment below and I will do my best to reply.

Now, on topic: John Smoltz. Yes, he pitched to a 6.35 ERA and a lousy 3-8 record last year. Yes, he was extremely hittable (95 hits in 78 IP), and yes, he’s 42 years old and will turn 43 about a month and a half into the season. But I really think this guy can help the Mets in 2010. Why? I’ll try my best to explain. Continue reading “Mets Should Add John Smoltz For 2010”

Mets 2010- Five Positive Story Lines

Colorado Rockies vs New York Mets at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js

After writing this site for a few years now and reading a lot of mainstream media and blogs about the Mets, I find that it’s easy to focus on the negative aspects of the team. It’s especially easy coming off a disastrous 2009 season opening Citi Field with a “thud”. As a matter of fact, the whole organization was dismal. So much so, that Jeff Wilpon had to tour the minor league cities apologizing for the ugly teams they fielded.

With that being said, I’d like to focus on some positive stories going into 2010. It’s not all bad when you have the highest payroll in the league. You always have a chance even if the people running the organization are subpar, as is the case with the Mets. Money can overcome a lot of obstacles. I feel really bad for the Pirates and Royals fans that know they have no shot before the season even starts. Although things don’t look great for the Mets yet, we do have a shot.

Here are my five positive story lines for the season.

Mets 2010 Prospect Rankings

Mets vs. Brewers

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js

I was reading a post by Tejesh at Mets Prospect Hub on his final ranking of 2009 for the Mets top prospects. Sometimes I think that minor league prospect lists require some explanation about the logic used to determine value in a list. For example, the players that spent significant time on the Mets Major League team in 2009 were Fernando Martinez (#1), Jon Niese (#9), Josh Thole (#10), and Nick Evans (not on top list).

Readiness for big league play isn’t prioritized as a qualifying factor. Total future upside appears to be the priority. I love to read blogs about the Mets minor leaguers, and there are several good ones, because I just don’t have the opportunity to see the minor league players in action especially the low-level leagues. My focus is always on which players are Major League ready or will be in the near future.

I’m still hoping to see Niese get a shot at the rotation in 2010 after missing the rest of the season last August when he tore his hamstring in an ugly scene on the mound. The 23 year-old made five starts last season, having two good ones and two that were kind of ugly, and the final start on August 5 when he got hurt. He ended with a 4.21 ERA over 25.2 IP. Not bad.

Citi Field at Night

Image via Wikipedia

I haven’t been posting links to good Mets reading lately and I’d like to get back to that in 2010. So here we go in no particular order:

  • James Fanelli of NY Post– This is a good article on the sketchy construction firms that the Mets used to help build Citi Field.
  • John Delcos’ New York Mets Report- Predicting the 2010 Opening Day starting lineup and batting order
  • Amazin’ Avenue– They’re doing a good series on the Mets All-Decade team including this link on third base
  • Ken Belson of NY Times– He writes a good piece about fellow Mets fans and their displeasure with the team leading to slow season tickets sales in December
  • Lee Jenkins of Sports Illustrated– This is a good column on why the Mets had to get Jason Bay this offseason
  • Beyond The Box Score– This is another good slant on Bay signing with the Mets and how the last couple of years of his contract will likely have Bay getting paid much more than his performance value

I wanted to post a quick Happy Holidays message to all of you that have read and supported The Mets Report this year. It’s been my best year ever for the site and it keeps getting better and better, unlike the Mets. I hope you enjoy the holidays with your friends and family.

If you find yourself with a couple of extra bucks in your pocket this year, you can help some good causes:

Boys and Girls Clubs of America– Official charity of Major League Baseball

The New York Mets Foundation– Official charity of the Mets

Mets Fan Social Network From MetsReport.com

I started up a social network, or community, for Mets fan on Ning in 2008. For some unknown reason, I let it slip away. But I’ve been inspired over the last few months to start it up again. And I think that’s because I’ve heard from so many Mets fans with opinions that they want to express. Sure, you can go the millions of pages on Facebook but there isn’t much functionality for you to express yourself. Those pages are all about the moderator.

You’re welcome to join for free. And you can create your own customized page there including the color scheme. The key features are:

  • Blog– You can add your own blog posts including saving drafts of posts. Make your opinions known without the hassle of having to set up and maintain a blog server
  • Forum– The message board for Mets fan to communicate with each other
  • Chat– Live chat with other Mets fans. It’s great to chat during games.
  • Photos– Add your photos to the site for other Mets fans to see, rate, and comment on
  • Videos– Add your own videos or link to videos from your site or YouTube
  • Groups– Create your own group within the network. I’m already thinking about creating the “Trade or demote Murphy” group
  • Events– Add new events that Mets fan would be interested in knowing about

Join up today and let your voice be heard to the Mets fan community.I’ve also added some links on the site on the Social Network page and the Live Game Chat page.
