Preview: Giants at Mets May 7, 2010

San Francisco Giants (17-10) at New York Mets (15-13)   7:10 pm

Jonathan Sanchez (2-2 2.48) vs Mike Pelfrey (4-1 2.40)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: This one could have the making of a good pitching match up. Pelfrey had an MRI earlier this week but got the go-ahead to make this start tonight. His right shoulder was stiff after his last start but he was okay to do some bullpen work. Sanchez has great stuff but doesn’t always have great games. He did throw eight shutout innings against Pittsburgh last month. So he’s capable of having excellent starts like his no-hitter last July.

Mets’ Mike Pelfrey Tests Shoulder Tonight

MLB: APR 25 Braves at Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsTonight’s game against the San Francisco Giants will be the first game that Mike Pelfrey tests his shoulder since having an MRI on Monday. The MRI was ordered because Pelfrey said he was feeling something in his right shoulder before his start on Saturday in Philadelphia.

We know what happened to him in Philadelphia. The dream season that he was having slammed into a brick wall. Pelfrey was lit up by the Phillies for 6 runs in 4 innings. It was the first bad game that he’s had this season. It was really the first bad inning that he’s had.

Pelfrey’s 2010 was starting to look like it might be legendary. But baseball legends aren’t made in April.

I have to wonder if Pelfrey was shocked when he gave up 6 runs in that fourth inning last Saturday. He had been cruising along so smoothly this year, even picking up a save in that 20-inning game in St. Louis.

Something must be wrong physically? Get an MRI.

We’ll see tonight if there’s really anything wrong or if Pelfrey’s dream season is just over and he needs to figure out how to get hitters out again.

Mets Links: Mike Pelfrey, David Wright, More

It’s time for an off-day full of links after a poor road trip. The Giants are coming to town tomorrow for a weekend series. And there were several curious decisions made by Jerry Manuel during the road trip that made many of us scratch our heads. It’s a good day to take a breath, get back on track this weekend, and get ready for the Mother’s Day pink bats and sweatbands on Sunday.

Here are the links:

  • Daily News– Mike Pelfrey asked to go back to New York after Sunday’s game in Philly to have his right shoulder examined. He felt some tightness in it before Saturday’s start.
  • Mets.com – The MRI on Pelfrey’s shoulder didn’t show anything and he says that he’s ready to make his next scheduled start on Friday night.
  • Metsblog.com – Interesting stats on the Mets poor pinch-hitting this season. Good questions are raised about some of the guys in Buffalo that are raking right now.
  • Daily News – Carlos Beltran has a new knee brace and plans to start running late this week or early next week. Didn’t we hear the same thing about Beltran a month ago?
  • Daily News – Daniel Murphy is still rehabbing his knee injury in Port St. Lucie with no timetable for a return to games.
  • NJ.com – Kelvim Escobar is having season-ending shoulder surgery. He never even made it to opening day. But the Mets owe him $1.25 million for his troubles this season.
  • Fangraphs – Dave Allen writes a good piece examining Dan Warthen’s strategy for Johan Santana to throw more inside fastballs the first time through the order and then change it up subsequently.
  • Daily News – David Wright was involved, at some point, with the financial advisers that are being sued by Cliff Floyd and Rondell White over a failed real estate deal. The article says Wright isn’t involved in the lawsuit.
  • Fangraphs – R.J. Anderson writes about the odd moves that Jerry Manuel has been making recently, and the fact that this is the kind of thing that could cost him his job.

Mets-Yankees Tickets May 21-23 2010 On Sale

The Mets are putting some more tickets on sale this morning at 10am EDT for the Mets-Yankees series at Citi Field. It goes without saying that these were tickets that they held out from the single game ticket sales expecting them to be sold as part of season or partial season packages. That goes to show you just how few tickets sold this season. I would guess they were especially hard hit in the packages that they’re trying to sell.

The games are listed as:

Friday May 21 7:10pm SNY

Saturday May 22 7:10pm Fox

Sunday May 23 8:05pm ESPN

We’ve written before that they’re running a promotion that weekend too. It’s a cap trade promotion. And we’ve written that 2010 ticket sales are down this year. So it’s a good chance for all of us to get out and see the Mets take on the reigning World Series champs.

It’s comical to hear Ed Coleman and Kevin Burkhardt asking Pedro Feliciano questions about giving up the game winning homer in extras today. What do they expect him to say? Cabrera hit the ball well and it went out. Enough said.

It’s got to be tough to stand there and answer questions about letting the team down in extra innings. But I guess that’s why they get paid the big bucks.

Audio- Feliciano 5/5/10

Jerry Manuel talks about Jason Bay and how cold he is. They’re going to keep running him out there even though he can’t hit the broad side of a barn right now. 0-12 in the Cincy series.

Reds 5 – Mets 4 May 5, 2010

New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathan Niese throws against the Colorado Rockies in their MLB baseball game in Denver

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsI only got to see the first four innings of this one because I was at work today. The bottom line is the Mets lost the second game in the series on a walk off home run in extras. Today Orlando Cabrera hit one off Pedro Feliciano in the tenth inning.

Jon Niese had a decent line: 6 IP and 4 ER. That’s not terrible but he had traffic on the bases in almost every inning. He gave up 12 hits in those 6 innings. Not good.

Angel Pagan and David Wright both had nice games at the plate. Pagan was 3 for 4 with a SB and 1 run scored. Wright was 2 for 5 with a solo homer, his 7th of the season.

The Mets finish their road trip at 2-4 and come home to play the Giants this weekend.

Preview: Mets at Reds May 5, 2010

New York Mets (15-12)  at Cincinnati Reds (13-14) 12:35 pm

Jon Niese (1-1 3.10) vs. Johnny Cueto (1-1 5.33)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Reds play the rubber game of the series early tomorrow afternoon. Niese is coming off three excellent starts in a row, only giving up 2 ER in his last 20 IP. The Mets have won all three games. Cueto has been up and down for the Reds this season. He has good stuff but his WHIP is at 1.52 so far this year. He’s had way too many runners on base against him.
