Mets Injury News: Ryan Church

Brooklyn Cyclones

Ryan Church played the DH for the Brooklyn Cyclones last night and went 3 for 3. He’s scheduled to play the field tonight in Brooklyn. Manager Jerry Manuel said there’s a chance that Church could be activated for Sunday’s Mets game against the Yankees.

Church left a hole in the Mets lineup the size of Flushing when he got hurt last month with his second concussion of the season. The Mets need him back, at full strength, badly.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Mets do to make room on the roster for Church. Most likely Marlon Anderson or Trot Nixon will be designated for assignment. Both would have to clear waivers, but I doubt that they would be claimed. Anderson might not want to go to New Orleans and opt to be a free agent but Nixon may go to Triple-A. Nixon started the season in Triple-A with the D-Backs organization.

What to watch: This is the first game of the dual stadium double header today. This will be a battle of two very inexperienced starting pitchers. The Mets really need to make a statement this weekend against the Yankees after losing a home series to the Mariners.

Umpire Suspended For Actions Regarding Mets

Brian Runge has been suspended for one game by Major League Baseball for his actions on Tuesday night at Shea Stadium. I’m thrilled to see MLB take action like this with an umpire that was clearly looking for a fight. His aggressive actions (chest bumping Jerry Manuel) turned a docile situation into a combustible scenario that’s embarrassing to MLB.

Jerry Manuel and Carlos Beltran, who were both ejected by Runge, have received undisclosed fines.

Angry Ump Runge Apologizes To Manuel

Umpire Brian Runge apologized to Jerry Manuel last night for his behavior during Tuesday night’s game. Apparently, Runge had spoken to his father, former umpire Paul Runge, who is a friend of Manuel’s.

Brian had ejected both Carlos Beltran and Manuel the night before and was completely responsible for escalating the situation. Manuel said Runge apologized to him when he brought the lineup card out prior to Wednesday’s game and he hoped that Runge wouldn’t get suspended for his actions.
