http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe big news is that Johan Santana left the game after the fifth inning with a strained pectoral muscle. He was cruising along pretty well too only allowing 1 run. I’m sure we’ll hear more about how serious it is over the coming days. With the expanded roster and no postseason hopes, Santana may not be seen again until next spring training.

The bullpen did a nice job of holding the Braves to 1 unearned run over the final four innings. Speaking of unearned runs, Joaquin Arias looked pretty shaky at shortstop tonight making one error and another poor throw that could have been a second error.

The offense had 8 hits and 3 walks generating the 4 runs which is an explosion for this sad bunch. David Wright hit a solo homer off Tim Hudson, his 22nd of the season. And Carlos Beltran hit a triple and scored on an overthrow. He still looks like he lost step or two even though he was able to leg out a triple.

The Mets avoid the embarrassment of a sweep by taking the final game of the four game series.

Johan Santana (10-9 3.02) vs Tim Hudson (15-5 2.24)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Under other circumstances this would be a great pitching matchup. But the Mets are trying to avoid an embarrassing sweep in Atlanta. Santana has been pitching pretty well but lost his last three starts. The Braves have won seven of the last eight games that Hudson started. He’s been pitching incredibly well this season, especially recently.

2010 Mets Lack Accountability

July 23, 2010 Los Angeles, CA..Mets Luis Castillo in action during the Major League Baseball game between the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Mets defeated the Dodgers, 6-1..Josh Thompson/CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsSaturday night’s game had about as much intrigue as watching coffee brew. However, I continued to watch because of an ensuing conversation between Keith Hernandez and Gary Cohen. The story started with an anecdote about Gregg Jefferies and the ’88 club. The newcomer to the big leagues had an impressive short stint in the majors in ’87. Apparently, he was already acting like a perennial All-Star, much to the dismay of the actual All-Stars. Jefferies did not want his bats grouped together with the rest of the team’s bats. Instead of scoffing at this request by the young player, the Mets happily indulged him. Jefferies gave a veteran request from a rookie mouth and was obliged. Keith told of the “team justice” which occurred after a loss. A teammate noticed the equipment manager packing the separated bats and he took the bag and hurled the bats onto the floor. Hernandez laughed but then continued on about his old Cardinal club. The team he broke in with had arguably the most intense and intimidating pitcher in history: Bob Gibson. He insisted the consequences of Gregg Jefferies’ diva request would have been swift or that Jefferies would not have had the nerve to request that in St. Louis at all. This lack of accountability is a recurring theme for the Mets. Let’s look at some of the 2010 examples. Continue reading “2010 Mets Lack Accountability”

NEW YORK - MAY 12: Mike Pelfrey #34 of the Ne...

The Mets continue to fold up like a tent in Atlanta. Even with some of the young guys in the lineup like Lucas Duda, there’s just no life and not nearly enough talent on the this team to compete with the Braves. Mike Pelfrey got hit for 4 runs in the first two innings and you could have turned the game off then. It was over.

The Mets sad offense only mustered 2 hits and 2 walks in the game. The Mets finally scored their lone run in the eighth inning on a walk by Ike Davis and RBI single by Luis Hernandez. The offense is one of the ugliest I can remember from this team.

Mike Pelfrey (13-7 3.61) vs Tommy Hanson (8-10 3.76)

TV: ESPN  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets will try to salvage something of the series tonight. Pelfrey has pitched four really good games in a row. He’s only given up 1 run over his last 16 innings over two starts. Hanson has been hit really hard in his last two starts losing both games. He’s given up 10 earned runs in his last 10 innings.

Mets Trade Jeff Francoeur To Texas Rangers

July 18, 2010 - San Francisco, CA, United States of America - 18 July 2010; San Francisco, CA: New York Mets Jeff Francoeur.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsJeff Francoeur is done in New York. It’s not a huge surprise as he was going to be non-tendered after the season anyway.

Here’s the press release from the Mets:

FLUSHING, N.Y. — The New York Mets today announced they traded outfielder Jeff Francoeur to the Texas Rangers in exchange for infielder Joaquin Arias.

Arias, 25, hit .276 (27-for-98) with five doubles, one triple, no home runs, 18 runs scored and nine RBIs in 50 games for Texas this season. The 6-1, 165-pound right-handed-hitting infielder made starts at second base (16), first base (five) and shortstop (one) this season for the Rangers, making two errors in 121 total chances (.983 fielding percentage). He landed on the 15-day disabled list twice with a lower back strain, first from April 30 to May 16 and then again from July 31 to Aug. 16. He was designated for assignment on Aug. 24.

A career .286 hitter, Arias originally signed a non-drafted free-agent contract with the New York Yankees on July 12, 2001. The Rangers acquired him on March 23, 2004, as the player to be named later in the deal that sent Alex Rodriguez to the Yankees. Arias, a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, made his Major League debut on Sept. 13, 2006, at Detroit, playing in 91 games for the Rangers over parts of four seasons.

Francoeur, 26, hit .237 (95-for-401) with 16 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 43 runs scored and 54 RBIs in 124 games for the Mets this season. Acquired from the Braves in exchange for Ryan Church on July 10, 2009, the 6-5, 220 pound Francoeur hit .268 (185-for- 690) with 21 home runs and 95 RBIs in 199 games with the Mets. http://mlb.mlb.com/scripts/webtools.js

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets season slipped away and it looked like they were just going through the motions tonight. Jon Niese wasn’t sharp at all allowing 8 runs (3 earned) in 4.2 innings. He gave up 10 hits and there are no excuses for that. But Luis Castillo let a double play ball go under his glove for an error with no outs in the fifth inning that could have made a big difference in the how the Braves 7 run inning turned out. David Ross hit a grand slam in the inning to cap the loss.

The Mets weak offense only mustered 7 hits and 3 walks in the game without Angel Pagan playing because of a sore wrist. They scored both runs in the fifth on a hit and three walks plus two sac flies. That was it for the night. The only good news was that Ruben Tejada went 2 for 4. He wasn’t the automatic out that he has been for most of the season in the bigs.

The Mets have two more games in Atlanta before heading to Chicago as they play out the string.
