Preview: Marlins at Mets August 25, 2010

Florida Marlins (62-62) at New York Mets (63-62)  1:35 pm

Alex Sanabia (2-1 3.77) vs Pat Misch (0-2 3.00)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets look to capitalize on last night’s win in the bottom of the ninth and keep the momentum going. Misch pitched okay in his last start in Houston giving up 3 runs in 6 innings. The Marlins are a better offensive team than the Astros though. This will be Sanabia’s sixth career start. He pitched really well in his last start against the Pirates going 7.2 innings and allowing only 1 run.

Mets 6 – Marlins 5 August 24, 2010

July 30, 2010 - Flushing, New York, United States of America - 30 July 2010: New York Mets outfielder Angel Pagan.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got a big win in the bottom of the ninth on a hit by Luis Castillo, of all people. R.A. Dickey pitched well until the top of the seventh when he gave up a 3-run homer to Gaby Sanchez that gave the Marlins a 5-4 lead. Dickey’s line looks bad but he pitched pretty well until he seemed to lose it in the seventh.

The Mets had some big offense getting 12 hits and 5 walks in the game. Angel Pagan was huge, as he has been all season, going 4 for 5 with 3 runs and a stolen base. This is the kind of offense I’ve been waiting to see all year. The Mets scored one in the eighth to tie on a Carlos Beltran single that scored Pagan. Then they put some hits together in the ninth capped by the Castillo single that scored Ike Davis.

It’s too bad that it took until the end of August for this kind of offense to show up. Too little too late. But it was good to see.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets reverted to having no offense and providing no support for Johan Santana today as they failed to finish off the Pirates in a sweep. Santana threw a complete game only giving up two solo homers including one to former Met Lastings Milledge.

The Mets offense only had 6 hits and 3 walks. Jose Reyes and Ike Davis had two hits apiece. The Mets put up one run in the first on a sac fly by Carlos Beltran and it looked like this was going to be a cake walk over the Pirates. Davis singled in the ninth but the Mets couldn’t do anything to move him along. It was odd that Jerry Manuel didn’t pull Davis for Luis Castillo to get a little more speed on the bases. But it didn’t matter as the Mets couldn’t get anything going behind Davis.

The Mets take two of three in Pittsburgh and have an off day tomorrow before facing the Marlins and Astros at home.

Dodgers Claim Rod Barajas on Waivers

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets assigned Rod Barajas to the Dodgers today on a waiver claim. It’s a good move for both teams and Barajas as well. The Dodgers have absolutely no offense at catcher with Russell Martin on the disabled list, Brad Ausmus and A.J. Ellis couldn’t hit their way out of a paper bag. So they’ll gain a little benefit from having Barajas.

It seems like this is the rare win-win-win situation. The Mets unload a useless player and dump salary in a meaningless season, the Dodgers get a little more offense from the catcher, and Barajas gets to go home to L.A. Jesus Feliciano will take over Barajas’ roster spot which is much more useful for the Mets.

Barajas has done next to nothing for the Mets for most of this season. He has 17 hits since the end of May! Although he seems like a good guy, he’s wasting a roster spot at this point.

Josh Thole is doing a nice job and Henry Blanco is a capable backup that the pitchers like to throw to.

Take a look at Barajas’ stats for 2010 by month and it’s easy to see why he’s history.

Preview: Mets at Pirates August 22, 2010

New York Mets (62-61) at Pittsburgh Pirates (40-83) 1:35 pm

Johan Santana (10-7 2.97) vs Zach Duke (5-12 5.32)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets actually have a chance to sweep a road series against an NL team today. Hey, it is the Pirates though. Santana went 8 innings in his last start in Houston but took the loss after giving up 4 runs. Duke has been getting knocked around recently and the Pirates lost the last four games he started. It’ll be interesting to see if the Mets go with Chris Carter in right field again against a lefty. The lineup has been scoring runs but doing it against righties.

Mets 5 – Pirates 1 August 21, 2010

July 19, 2010 - Phoenix, AZ, United States - epa02254193 New York Mets David Wright watches his fifth inning double down the right field line, during their Major League Baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, 19 July, 2010.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe game was originally delayed by rain in Pittsburgh and later called in the sixth inning with the Mets getting a win. It’s the Mets first road series win against a National League team all season. Jon Niese pitched really well again and got a complete game win going 5 innings and only allowing 1 run on 5 hits.

The Mets scored a run in the first on a strange play when Chris Carter struck out, the ball got away from the catcher, and Jose Reyes was at third and took home on the throw to first. Reyes slid into home head first and looked like he might have been injured on the play. But he stayed in the game. David Wright hit a long homer to center in the fifth, a 3-run shot, that put the Mets way ahead and sealed the win.

Preview: Mets at Pirates August 21, 2010

New York Mets (61-61) at Pittsburgh Pirates (40-82) 7:05 pm

Jon Niese (7-5 3.38) vs James McDonald (2-2 4.26)

TV: WPIX  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets finally found some offense last night but it probably won’t be as easy tonight against McDonald. His last start was a really good one against the Marlins going 7 innings and only giving up 1 run on 3 hits. Niese has had three excellent starts in a row without getting a win. He’s only given up 3 runs in 21 innings over that span. Expect to see Chris Carter back in the cleanup spot tonight after having some success personally and as a team last night.
