http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got another great start from R.A. Dickey. He continues to surprise me with every start. I really thought he was a fluke. Tonight he threw a complete game 5- hitter and almost had a shutout, only giving up 1 run in the ninth.

The Mets offense lit up Zack Duke big time for 9 hits in 3.1 innings. They scored all 9 runs in the first four innings of the game. Carlos Beltran and Nick Evans homered in the game. Angel Pagan was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s as well.

The Mets take the first two of the four game series against the lowly Pirates. It looks like the Mets finally found a team they can match up with.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets season slipped away and it looked like they were just going through the motions tonight. Jon Niese wasn’t sharp at all allowing 8 runs (3 earned) in 4.2 innings. He gave up 10 hits and there are no excuses for that. But Luis Castillo let a double play ball go under his glove for an error with no outs in the fifth inning that could have made a big difference in the how the Braves 7 run inning turned out. David Ross hit a grand slam in the inning to cap the loss.

The Mets weak offense only mustered 7 hits and 3 walks in the game without Angel Pagan playing because of a sore wrist. They scored both runs in the fifth on a hit and three walks plus two sac flies. That was it for the night. The only good news was that Ruben Tejada went 2 for 4. He wasn’t the automatic out that he has been for most of the season in the bigs.

The Mets have two more games in Atlanta before heading to Chicago as they play out the string.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got a big game out of Mike Pelfrey even after he struggled in the first inning. He gave up 2 walks and a single in the first and I thought it was going to be a long night. But he settled in to go 8 innings on 123 pitches without allowing a run. He was helped out by two excellent plays in the field by Angel Pagan. It seems like every night Pagan is making plays. He never takes a night off.

As usual, the Mets had very little offense. But it was just enough to squeak out a win because Pelfrey was so good. They only had 3 hits and 5 walks in the game. They scored off Nelson Figueroa in the first on a sac fly by David Wright. And Ruben Tejada walked in the fourth with the bases loaded. That was it for the offense.

The bullpen made it close in the ninth. Bobby Parnell and Hisanori Takahashi gave up 3 hits and 1 run with the Astros threatening to tie or win it. But Takahashi bailed out Parnell to preserve the win.

The Mets take the first game of the series and do it again tomorrow night behind Johan Santana.

Mets 6 – Marlins 5 August 24, 2010

July 30, 2010 - Flushing, New York, United States of America - 30 July 2010: New York Mets outfielder Angel Pagan.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got a big win in the bottom of the ninth on a hit by Luis Castillo, of all people. R.A. Dickey pitched well until the top of the seventh when he gave up a 3-run homer to Gaby Sanchez that gave the Marlins a 5-4 lead. Dickey’s line looks bad but he pitched pretty well until he seemed to lose it in the seventh.

The Mets had some big offense getting 12 hits and 5 walks in the game. Angel Pagan was huge, as he has been all season, going 4 for 5 with 3 runs and a stolen base. This is the kind of offense I’ve been waiting to see all year. The Mets scored one in the eighth to tie on a Carlos Beltran single that scored Pagan. Then they put some hits together in the ninth capped by the Castillo single that scored Ike Davis.

It’s too bad that it took until the end of August for this kind of offense to show up. Too little too late. But it was good to see.

Phillies 6 – Mets 5 August 8, 2010

July 25, 2010 - Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES - epa02261051 New York Mets' R.A. Dickey pitches during first inning of a Major League baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles, California, USA, 25 July 2010.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe glory days for R.A. Dickey came crashing down today as he only lasted 3 innings and gave up 6 runs (4 earned). The Phillies put up 5 runs in the third, mostly on a 3-run shot by Raul Ibanez. Dickey just didn’t seem to have it from the get-go the Phillies were really patient today taking a lot of his pitches.

The Mets had some offense going with 10 hits and 1 walk in the game. They got to Roy Halladay, which doesn’t happen very often. But it was just too little to recover from the damage done to Dickey earlier in the game. The Mets put up 2 runs in the first and looked like they were going to run rough-shot over the Phils today. Josh Thole went 3 for 4 and Angel Pagan was all over the place going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 SB’s. Chris Carter had a great pinch hit RBI double to the wall in center field that just missed going out and tying the game.

The Mets drop another series and head home to play the Rockies on Tuesday.

Mets’ Carlos Beltran Returns From DL

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets made room on the roster for Carlos Beltran by optioning Jesus Feliciano to Triple-A Buffalo after yesterday’s game. Jerry Manuel has told reporters that Beltran will slot into the cleanup spot and start on Thursday in center field. It’s too bad for Feliciano. He hit .278 in 54 at-bats and did a nice job. He’s no All-Star but I like his game as a solid fielder and a consistent bat off the bench.

Manuel also told reporters that Angel Pagan will start in right field on Thursday in San Francisco. Jeff Francoeur will hit the bench. Clearly, that’s the right decision. There’s no way that Francoeur deserves to play over Pagan. Pagan’s game is so much more dynamic with his ability to hit consistently and the speed he has.

When asked by reporters if he thought he would be rusty at the plate:

“Who knows? I mean, the way I played in Port St. Lucie, I think I swung the bat well. But at the big league level it’s a different story,” Beltran said. “I do feel like I need to make adjustments. It will take me time. I don’t expect to come here and rake. I just expect to come here and like I say, do my part. Being able to contribute any way I can, and I believe in that.”

You can listen to Beltran’s interview from Citi Field yesterday with Wayne Hagin of WFAN.

Mets 3 – Braves 0 July 11, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsI’m sorry the recap is a little late today. I was at the game and traffic on the Whitestone was terrible on the way home. Construction!!! It was a great day to be at the game with David Daniels and Kerel Cooper.

Johan Santana was in complete shut down mode for the second straight start. He went 7 strong innings giving up 5 hits and 3 walks but no runs. Bobby Parnell and Francisco Rodriguez cleaned up the eighth and ninth without allowing a baserunner. The Mets pitching completely dominated the Braves today.

The Mets offense was working today too. They had 13 hits and 3 walks. As usual, Angel Pagan was doing the heavy lifting going 3 for 5 with 1 run. Ike Davis was 2 for 3 with a monster home run to center in the sixth off Derek Lowe. It was long and to the left of the apple and I heard on the radio it went 440 feet.

The Mets manage to avoid the sweep before the All-Star break.
