What to watch: The Mets try to pick themselves up from the floor after last night’s devastating loss. They need to win both remaining games in San Diego just to split the series. Parnell makes his first Major League start after being rushed into the rotation after Mike Pelfrey left the team for the birth of his first child. Latos has made four starts for the Padres and hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in any of them. Don’t expect this game to be an easy one.

Mets Lose Jon Niese For 2009 Season

Jon_NieseReports are coming out tonight that Jon Niese is gone for the season after leaving the game in the second inning today. His right hamstring tendon is completely torn from the bone, an ugly injury. All of us that saw the game today knew it was serious when he collapsed on the mound and couldn’t walk off the field.

He’ll have surgery and is expected to recover in time for 2010 spring training. What a shame for the 22 year-old who really seemed to have found himself since struggling early this season.

Jerry Manuel told the media in his post game press conference that the Mets are considering starting Bobby Parnell in Niese’s spot. That could get interesting considering how badly Parnell has struggled for much of this season.

Mets 9 – Cardinals 0 August 5, 2009

The Mets broke out the bats for this one and rocked the Cardinals before leaving for San Diego today. The bad news is that they lost two more players in the process. Jon Niese started the game and went 1.2 innings only giving up 1 hit and 1 walk. But in the second inning he was covering first base on a ground ball and appeared to be hurt badly. He went into the splits with his front leg slipping in the dirt. He attempted to throw a pitch to test the leg and went down in a heap on the mound. And he was carried off the field by the trainers. It looked pretty serious.

Gary Sheffield left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after hitting a ball to the wall in left center. It looked like an easy double but Sheffield stopped at first base and immediately walked off the field. Apparently, his right hamstring was bothering him again.

The Mets got some outstanding offense for a change. They were all over Kyle Lohse for 5 of their 9 runs. He couldn’t make it out of the third inning. David Wright and Angel Pagan did the most damage getting three hits apiece and both homered in the game.

Nelson Figueroa got another chance today and made the most of it going 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of Niese. Bobby Parnell then came in and threw 3 scoreless innings. After the game, Jerry Manuel said that they’re stretching Parnell out in anticipation that he’ll be moving to the rotation.

The Mets leave for San Diego feeling a little better about themselves after taking a beating at home by the D-Backs and splitting the two-game series with the Cardinals.

Mets Stand Pat at 2009 Trade Deadline

I have to say that I’m surprised that the Mets didn’t even pull off a minor deal at the non-waiver trade deadline. Of course, there will still be trades for players that have made it through waivers until August 31. After the brutal week that GM Omar Minaya had, he could have used a trade to take the attention away from his lack of mass communication skills.

Victor Martinez going to Boston wasn’t shocking. But I had hoped the Mets would make a splash by landing him. The Mets will need a catcher and first baseman next season and nobody better than Martinez could fit that bill.

I thought that the Mets would have tried to land some Major League talent who is under contract for more than this season. Apparently, the Mets brain trust is married to their prospects. They better pan out. That’s all that I can say.

I haven’t seen anything from Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese, or Fernando Martinez that would prevent me from trading them for a proven Major Leaguer that’s under contract for more than half a season.

I’m not saying that the Mets should have gone all out to make the playoffs this year. But they could have tried to fill some huge holes in the lineup that they’ll have next season. Left field, first base, and catcher are all question marks for next season.

Mets Turn Down Roy Halladay Trade

Jon Heyman of SI.com wrote on his Twitter account today that the Mets were offered a deal by the Toronto Blue Jays for Roy Halladay. The deal would have sent Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Bobby Parnell, and Ruben Tejada to the Jays.

As much as I’d like to see Halladay in a Met uniform, it doesn’t make sense to unload four big prospects for him right now for the Mets. The 2009 season is all but over for the Mets so they shouldn’t be in a position to be buyers right now.

They can get their hands on Halladay after the 2010 season as a free agent anyway. So to give up young players wouldn’t be a prudent move for the Mets as a team. It’s too bad though. I’d love to see Johan Santana and Halladay together for a couple of years.
