New York Mets starting pitcher Hisanori Takahashi throws a pitch to the New York Yankees in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsI have to admit that I was shocked that Hisanori Takahashi had a great start going 6 shutout innings. I never would have expected that. He was really outstanding especially considering that he got no run support.

Speaking of run support, the Mets had absolutely no offense again. Last night’s 10 run outburst seems like a mirage. They only put together 4 hits as a team and two of them were in the ninth inning when Jason Bay singled and Ike Davis doubled him in. That was the offense. Don’t blink or you might miss it.

Alex Cora blew the game in the seventh inning for the Mets. His costly throwing error allowed an unearned run to score that would have made a difference in the game.

The Mets and Yankees will play two more on national TV this weekend.

New York Mets batter Wright reacts after striking out in seventh inning against Colorado Rockies in their MLB baseball game in Denver

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets got a great start from Johan Santana, as usual, going 7 IP and giving up 2 ER’s on a homer by Troy Glaus in the third inning. Santana seemed to get stronger as the game went on. Pedro Feliciano took over in the eighth and started the ninth out by giving up a hit to McCann that would eventually be the winning run.

The Mets had only five total hits in the game. The two runs were solo homers, both in the fifth inning by Ike Davis and Jeff Francoeur.

The Mets lost on a horrible bottom of the ninth. Jenry Mejia relieved Feliciano and looked scared. He fell on the mound after a pitch and walked Escobar when he was trying to bunt with a man on base. The game was lost when Melky Cabrera chopped a ball to third, David Wright picked it up and threw wide of first allowing the runner on second to score. It wasn’t a terrible throw and looked like Davis could have come off the base to get it.

Wright’s wild throw capped off a terrible night for him going 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts. It’s a rough way to lose a game.

The Mets split the two game series in Atlanta and head to Washington for two games.

MLB: Dodgerss vs Mets APR 27

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsJon Niese didn’t have his finest start tonight. It started poorly giving up a 3-run homer in the first inning and got bad again in the fifth inning. Niese only lasted 4.1 IP and gave up 6 ER’s. He was lucky to avoid the loss. We’ll talk about that in a minute.

Hisanori Takahashi did it again with 2 scoreless innings of relief. How good has he been? His ERA in down to 2.78, crazy good for a long reliever.

There wasn’t much offense to talk about before the eighth inning. Jeff Francoeur knocked in a couple runs in the second and the sixth but that was it. The Mets exploded in the eighth though for 6 runs. It could have been more because Ike Davis barely missed a grand slam that was just foul of the right field pole. Chris Carter got his first hit with a pinch-hit RBI double. It was a great inning offensively. Continue reading “Mets 8 – Nationals 6 May 11, 2010”

MLB: APR 25 Braves at Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets got a good start from John Maine, his third in a row. He went 6 IP giving up 2 ER on back to back homers by Adam Kennedy and Ryan Zimmerman in the third inning. He did have a lot of traffic on the bases giving up 7 hits and 4 walks but managed to keep the damage to a minimum.

Pedro Feliciano was terrible in the eighth inning giving up 3 straight hits and a run while only recording one out. That’s where the game was lost.

The Mets did have 12 hits including a long home run in the ninth by Angel Pagan. The Mets left 11 runners on base including Ike Davis leaving 5 and Jose Reyes 4. Speaking of Reyes, he got tossed in the seventh inning for throwing his bat and helmet down after a called third strike. Jerry Manuel came out and got tossed immediately after Reyes.

New York Mets' Barajas watches his solo home run ball leave park against Cincinnati Reds during MLB game in Cincinnati

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThis was definitely one of the most exciting games of the year. I saved it on the Tivo to watch the highlights again. What a game!

Mike Pelfrey had an excellent start going 7.1 strong innings on only 85 pitches. I thought he was going the distance but he ran into a little trouble in the eighth. Overall, it was an excellent showing especially considering that he had some shoulder stiffness after his last start.

It was also a huge game for Ike Davis. He continues to impress with two home runs tonight off tough lefty Jonathan Sanchez. Sanchez hadn’t even given up a hit to a left-handed http://laparkan.com/buy-prednisone/ batter before tonight. Davis also made another incredible catch going over the rail into the dugout to catch a foul ball in the ninth for a huge out.

But the hero of the game was Rod Barajas. He also had two home runs in the game, if you can believe that. His second home run was a walk off in the bottom of the ninth to break the tie and win the game after Francisco Rodriguez blew the save.

It’s these kind of games that really get you pumped up. I’m hoping that this win can carry them for a while.

Mets’ Ike Davis A Hit With Collectors

Davis is congratulated by teammates after a home run against the Atlanta Braves in the fifth inning of their MLB National League baseball game in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsDarren Rovell writes in his Sports Biz column that collectors are lining up pre-orders for autographed baseballs from Ike Davis. Steiner Sports is selling his autographed photos for $49.99-$59.99 and baseballs for $59.99.

I’m not a collector but I like what I’ve seen from Davis in his first week and a half with the Mets. He certainly looks like he’s got the goods to stick around for a long time. If he does, the memorabilia should only increase in value.

Rovell talked to the founder and chairman of Steiner Sports Brandon Steiner:

Steiner says he never tells fans to buy autographs for the investment, but can’t help but mention that he sold Mariano Rivera’s autograph for $25 ten years ago. Signed Rivera balls now go for ten times that amount. In 1996, fans who paid for Derek Jeter’s first autograph signing paid $20.

“It’s one of the biggest pre-order responses we’ve had,” Steiner said. “It’s good for the industry.”

Maybe it’s time I get into the memorabilia game.

Mets 7 – Dodgers 3 April 28, 2010

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets completed the sweep against the Dodgers this afternoon, the second consecutive sweep amid a 9-1 home stand. It’s been an incredible week and a half for the Mets surging into first place in the NL East.

The pitching was good once again today with John Maine going 6 innings and giving up only two earned runs on a Russell Martin homer in the fifth. He got through six on 102 pitches, which is pretty good for Maine. His velocity doesn’t appear to have improved. His fastball was still in the high 80’s. But he was firing strikes right from the start and he ended up striking out 9.

The bullpen cleaned up the last three innings without giving up a run. Francisco Rodriguez did give up  1 hit and 1 walk in the ninth. Other than that, the bullpen was spotless.

On offense, Angel Pagan and Jeff Francoeur both had 2 RBI’s and the Mets, as a team, had 5 two-out RBI’s. That’s some serious clutch hitting. The new lineup with Jose Reyes batting third is definitely working right now.

Ike Davis continues to chip in on a daily basis. He was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. He seems to add something on offense in every game. His season average is up to .355 with a .424 OBP and .980 OPS. Not bad for a rookie.

The first place Mets are off tomorrow before heading to Philly for a weekend series.
