CitiFieldaphobia – Who Fears Hitting at Citifield?

New York Mets David Wright reacts to home plate umpire Paul Schrieber after striking out at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsRod Barajas can hit the ball out of Citi Field. So can Ike Davis. Citi Field does not seem to intimidate the new guys.

David Wright on the other hand has struggled to find his power stoke since leaving Shea Stadium behind. Last year we chalked up some of his power loss to playing in the World Classic and some to Citi Field. This year there are no excuses and I don’t think his power struggles are over just yet.

Although Wright will easily top last years home run totals, many fans I have spoken with seem to think Citi Field has gotten into his head.  Wright hit 4 of his 7 homers on the last 6 game road trip but he’s still going to have to find a way to hit homers at home.

Of course, I’m also worried about Wright’s strikeouts. He’s on a pace to strikeout over 200 times this year. With 14 strikeouts in the last 7 games I tend to think maybe David should have his eyes checked because he’s not seeing the ball correctly. MLB: Dodgerss vs Mets APR 27

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsJon Niese didn’t have his finest start tonight. It started poorly giving up a 3-run homer in the first inning and got bad again in the fifth inning. Niese only lasted 4.1 IP and gave up 6 ER’s. He was lucky to avoid the loss. We’ll talk about that in a minute.

Hisanori Takahashi did it again with 2 scoreless innings of relief. How good has he been? His ERA in down to 2.78, crazy good for a long reliever.

There wasn’t much offense to talk about before the eighth inning. Jeff Francoeur knocked in a couple runs in the second and the sixth but that was it. The Mets exploded in the eighth though for 6 runs. It could have been more because Ike Davis barely missed a grand slam that was just foul of the right field pole. Chris Carter got his first hit with a pinch-hit RBI double. It was a great inning offensively. Continue reading “Mets 8 – Nationals 6 May 11, 2010”

Mets’ Jason Bay 2010 Slow Start

Mets' Bay at bat against the Cardinals' in the first inning of their MLB National League game in St Louis

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsHey, readers. My name’s Doug Gausepohl. I’m a new columnist here at The Mets Report, mainly to give a different perspective to give all readers something to chew on. I’m 20 years young, so I haven’t been through any Mets “glory days”, unless you consider 2000/2006 glory days (I don’t).

If you watched the game last night, you noticed Jason Bay struck out to end the game with the tying run on base. If you’ve watched the Metropolitans on a consistent basis this year, you’ve noticed that Jason Bay’s production has not yet been as advertised.

Through 31 games this year, Bay has hit .248, with 1 HR and 14 RBI.

In my opinion, the most startling differential in his stats so far is his slugging percentage. He has a career .515 SLG, and this year it’s only .389. At his current pace, he’s going to finish with 5 HR and 71 RBI. Let the second-guessing for the Mets not pursuing Matt Holliday further commence. Continue reading “Mets’ Jason Bay 2010 Slow Start”

Giants 6 – Mets 5 May 9, 2010

MLB: Dodgerss vs Mets APR 27

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe game started out with an utterly embarrassing performance by Oliver Perez. And that’s saying something! Perez only made it through 3.1 IP giving up 2 hits, 7 walks, and 1 HBP. He was lucky to only give up 3 ER’s.

The Mets made a nice comeback in the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead. Jason Bay had 2 hits including a severely wind-helped double to score 2 runs in the seventh.

Jenry Mejia blew the game in the eighth giving up a 2 run homer to Aaron Rowand.

David Wright had a horrendous 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts. He capped it off by getting thrown out in the ninth for arguing a third strike call.

The Mets still win the series and the Nats are coming to town tomorrow night.

New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathan Niese throws against the Colorado Rockies in their MLB baseball game in Denver

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets put the beat down on the Phillies tonight led by an outstanding start from Jon Niese and two homers by Rod Barajas. Niese was in complete control through 7 IP, helped by having a lead from the second inning on. The Mets win their eighth straight game in a route. The best way to win one in Philly.

The offense really came alive in the bandbox Citizens Bank Ballpark. The Mets had 10 hits including four homers, the two by Barajas plus David Wright and Jeff Francoeur had one each.  And Angel Pagan was 3 for 5 with a triple and two RBI’s.

Francoeur was hit by a pitch pretty badly on the left elbow in the seventh inning. He ran the bases, and even scored, but had to leave the game. X-rays were negative though. I was disappointed that Niese didn’t go for payback in the bottom of the inning. Jenry Mejia did hit Chase Utley in the eighth but it was a breaking ball. Clearly, he wasn’t trying to hit him.

Overall, it was an excellent game. There were some great plays in the outfield including two by Francoeur and one at the wall by Jason Bay. The Mets are really firing on all cylinders right now. It’s exciting to watch again.

Mets Wrap Up Successful Homestand – Look Ahead

The Mets have had a big home stand against the Cubs, Braves, and Dodgers. David Daniels writes that the next series in Philadelphia could set the tone for the rest of the season.

Are we getting excited yet!?! Our Met’s are now on a 6 game winning streak and hopefully we can make it a 7 game winning streak before heading off to Philly. This was a wildly successful homestand.

Yes, It’s a little early in the year but I’m so looking forward to this weekend series with the Phillies. I love the rivalry. Considering the rough start the Mets had, catching the Phillies will make this series that much more entertaining.

Jon Niese will open the series Friday followed by Mike Pelfrey and then Johan Santana. The Phillies pitchers have yet to be announced. This lines up our top two pitchers for a crucial series that will set the tone for the entire year. Will the Phillies embarrass the Mets or will the Mets show they can play toe-to-toe with the defending NL Champs and leave Philly in first? Mets 4 – Dodgers 1 Apirl 27, 2010 Game 1

New York Mets starting pitcher Johan Santana slaps hands with David Wright at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets completed their fifth straight win and fourth shutout of the season behind Johan Santana’s 6 innings. He didn’t have his best stuff and his velocity was down today. The fastball was in the upper 80’s. But he got through six innings giving up 4 hits and 3 walks and getting the win.

Fernando Nieve and Pedro Feliciano tacked on three more shutout innings after Santana left the game.

The Mets didn’t have a ton of offense, which has been the case often lately. But they had enough to get the win. They had only 8 hits as a team and left 13 runners on base. Luis Castillo had 2 RBI single in the 7th inning and Jason Bay hit his first homer of the year in the second inning.
