http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThere actually was some good news in a night when Jose Reyes, Angel Pagan, and Jason Bay didn’t start the game. That news? Johan Santana pitched really well after four really bad starts in a row. As usual, the Mets didn’t back up Santana with any runs. The just couldn’t do anything against Livan Hernandez. Santana went 7 strong innings giving up 1 run on 98 pitches. It looked like he made an argument to Jerry Manuel to stay in the game but lost the argument.

The Mets offense was weak against Hernandez and the Nationals with only 8 hits and no walks. Henry Blanco and Jesus Feliciano had two hits apiece but all 8 Mets hits were singles.

The game was 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh when the Nats tied it off Santana. It was lost in the bottom of the ninth when Pedro Feliciano loaded the bases and Ryan Zimmermann hit a sac fly off Ryota Igarashi.

What to watch: Who would’ve ever thought Livan would be having a better season than Santana? That’s the case. But the Nationals have lost six of seven games now. Santana has lost two straight games in pitched poorly in four straight. The Mets need him to turn it around quickly.

Johan Santana and Developing Young Pitchers

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsMets fans are quickly realizing that the 2010 version of Johan Santana is not the same pitcher that the team traded a proverbial “bucket of balls” for back in 2008. After Santana and the Mets agreed to a 6-year, $137.5 million extension following the trade that winter, the left-handed ace went 16-7 with an ERA of 2.53. Santana had a Cy Young caliber season that year, he could have easily had 4-5 more wins, if not for a horrendous bullpen that ultimately led to that team’s demise.

Fast-forward to the present, and it is plain to see that Santana is performing like anything but an ace. Coming off an injury shortened season in 2009, the wear and tear on Santana’s elbow is certainly showing, especially coming off surgery. The 31-year-old’s velocity is down considerably, which lessens the effect of his signature out pitch, his change-up. Combine the drop in velocity of his fastball with poor location of seemingly all of his pitches recently, and you have the make-up of a very hittable and predictable Major League pitcher.

With Santana’s 2010 campaign so far in mind, it reminds us of the importance of developing young pitchers within the organization (a big-market organization, at that), so the need for acquiring high end starting pitchers down the road isn’t as great. Video: Cliff Lee 2010 Trade Market

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsESPN’s Buster Olney talks about the current trade market for pitcher Cliff Lee. Although there are several teams that have Lee on their radar, Olney lists the Mets and Twins as the favorites to land him. Olney also says that the Mariners are ready to make a deal now so whoever is quickest to pull the trigger should come away with a front line starter for the second half of the season.

We’ve had some differing opinions about what the Mets should do before the deadline this year. Doug Gausepohl wrote that the Mets should forget Cliff Lee and focus on Roy Oswalt. Gabe Aguilar wrote that the Mets should trade prospects not depth for Cliff Lee and there’s a big difference.

Both make good points and we all hate to see good young players go. But the Twins didn’t come away with anything great in the Johan Santana deal. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I think we can all point to the Victor Zambrano for Scott Kazmir deal as one that got away.

Johan Santana Struggles as Twins Fans Watch A Pavano Win

David Daniels CitiField

If ever there was one game I could pick to attend this year based on entertainment value alone, Saturday’s game was the one I wanted to see. Johan Santana against Carl Pavano. Interleague play. So I packed up my bag, hit stubhub and went down the block for a visit. Here’s what I saw…

Old Ace Against Former Team

There were quite a few Minnesota fans wearing Santana’s Jersey from his Twins days. They were there to see their team take on their old Ace. I’m sure all Twins fans are secretly laughing at how this deal turned out, especially after the first inning.

Pavano Comes Back to NY

Pavano had always been my favorite target when bringing up “great” Yankees. Carl Pavano is one huge sore spot for any Yankee fan and I remind Yankee fans of this fact whenever I can. Now my gut feeling was he would turn around and show NY just what they were missing. He will always have something to prove when coming to NY. He did just that with a 3 hit, complete game shutout and also went 2 for 3 at the plate.

There were also plenty of Minnesota fans who were sporting the new “stache” that Pavano has grown a la Keith Hernandez. Continue reading “Johan Santana Struggles as Twins Fans Watch A Pavano Win”

What to watch: The Mets can win the series with a victory this afternoon. Santana is pitching against his former team and it’s his first start since news broke that he was accused of raping a woman in Florida last October. Pavano has been pitching really well and won three straight games. His last start was a complete game win against Philly in which he only gave up 1 run.

Johan Santana Accused Of Rape

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe face of the Mets franchise was accused of raping a woman on a Ft. Myers, FL golf course last October. Florida prosecutors didn’t press charges because there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that anything that happened wasn’t consensual.

The married father of three has taken a big reputation hit on this one. The Mets only official comment on the situation is that it’s a “family matter”. And Santana’s only comment was that he wasn’t charged with anything and that’s all he could say about it.

This is a PR nightmare for an organization that hates players getting in trouble publicly, whether they’re guilty or not. I doubt that anything will happen. Santana is the highest paid player on the team and one of the only legitimate stars on the team, especially when Carlos Beltran is injured so often. The Mets depend on Santana to generate revenue, so they’re beholden to him.

According to the Daily News, the accuser told this to the police:

The alleged assault happened on the evening of October 27 at a course located near a gated community in Ft. Myers, according to the police report.

The woman claimed she and Santana were strolling together when the pitcher suddenly “began to kiss her and pull up her top, unclasping her bra.” Although she “told Johan no multiple times,” Santana lifted her skirt and thrust his hands into her underpants, the report states.

The accuser claimed Santana then tore her skirt off and raped her while she “continuously told Johan ‘no.'” The Mets hurler responded by bruising her right calf and “grabbed her hair” before he “ejaculated on her upper thigh,” according to the report.

Instead of immediately calling the cops, the woman told detectives she “cleaned her thigh with her underwear.”

She then wandered over to a tennis court “and continued to sit at the tennis courts as Johan played tennis with another person.” Detectives later retrieved the clothes the woman wore.
