Mets Five Prospects That Could Impact 2010

Mets Thole Singles for First Major League Hit in Denver

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsAs promised, here is my list of five prospects, in no particular order, that could potentially help the Mets in 2010. Enjoy!

1. Josh Thole, C (age 23)

Josh Thole is coming off of a tremendous season in which he hit .328/.395/.422 in the Eastern League (AA) followed up by an impressive .321/.356/.396 performance when called up to the Mets in September. Since his power is limited, Thole’s defense will go along way in determining whether he will be a starter or backup at the big league level. I do expect Thole to potentially help the Mets in 2010. Right now the current catching tandem is Omir Santos and Henry Blanco, which I can’t really see lasting the full season, especially if the Mets are getting little production from the catching position and Thole is tearing up the International League (AAA), both of which are realistic scenarios.

Mets 2010 Prospect Rankings

Mets vs. Brewers

I was reading a post by Tejesh at Mets Prospect Hub on his final ranking of 2009 for the Mets top prospects. Sometimes I think that minor league prospect lists require some explanation about the logic used to determine value in a list. For example, the players that spent significant time on the Mets Major League team in 2009 were Fernando Martinez (#1), Jon Niese (#9), Josh Thole (#10), and Nick Evans (not on top list).

Readiness for big league play isn’t prioritized as a qualifying factor. Total future upside appears to be the priority. I love to read blogs about the Mets minor leaguers, and there are several good ones, because I just don’t have the opportunity to see the minor league players in action especially the low-level leagues. My focus is always on which players are Major League ready or will be in the near future.

I’m still hoping to see Niese get a shot at the rotation in 2010 after missing the rest of the season last August when he tore his hamstring in an ugly scene on the mound. The 23 year-old made five starts last season, having two good ones and two that were kind of ugly, and the final start on August 5 when he got hurt. He ended with a 4.21 ERA over 25.2 IP. Not bad.

Mets Recall Elmer Dessens

To replace Jon Niese on the roster, the Mets have recalled Elmer Dessens from Triple-A Buffalo. Dessens last pitched for the Mets on July 19 before being designated for assignment. He then accepted an assignment to Buffalo.

He’s pitched in 9 games this season with the Mets to a 3.65 ERA. In 12.1 innings he’s given up 5 earned runs.

Expect Dessens to get the long man job with Tim Redding getting a spot start replacing Mike Pelfrey on Saturday in San Diego.

Mets Pelfrey To Miss Next Start

The Mets announced today that Mike Pelfrey left the team yesterday for his home in Kansas for the birth of his first child. Between this news and the season ending injury to Jon Niese, this really puts the Mets in a bind for starting pitching.

Pelfrey was scheduled to start against the Padres in San Diego on Saturday. With Nelson Figueroa pitching 4.1 innings yesterday, Tim Redding will probably get a start against the Padres.

Redding’s last start was July 2 against the Pirates when he gave up 5 runs in 2.1 innings, then lost his spot in the rotation.

Mets Lose Jon Niese For 2009 Season

Jon_NieseReports are coming out tonight that Jon Niese is gone for the season after leaving the game in the second inning today. His right hamstring tendon is completely torn from the bone, an ugly injury. All of us that saw the game today knew it was serious when he collapsed on the mound and couldn’t walk off the field.

He’ll have surgery and is expected to recover in time for 2010 spring training. What a shame for the 22 year-old who really seemed to have found himself since struggling early this season.

Jerry Manuel told the media in his post game press conference that the Mets are considering starting Bobby Parnell in Niese’s spot. That could get interesting considering how badly Parnell has struggled for much of this season.

Post Game: Mets-Cardinals August 5, 2009

We have some post game audio from Bobby Parnell and Jerry Manuel after the Mets 9-0 win over the Cardinals.  Here’s Parnell talking about his game and the injury to Jon Niese:

And here’s Jerry Manuel talking about the win, the injury to Niese, Gary Sheffield, and the possibility of moving Parnell to the rotation:

The Mets broke out the bats for this one and rocked the Cardinals before leaving for San Diego today. The bad news is that they lost two more players in the process. Jon Niese started the game and went 1.2 innings only giving up 1 hit and 1 walk. But in the second inning he was covering first base on a ground ball and appeared to be hurt badly. He went into the splits with his front leg slipping in the dirt. He attempted to throw a pitch to test the leg and went down in a heap on the mound. And he was carried off the field by the trainers. It looked pretty serious.

Gary Sheffield left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after hitting a ball to the wall in left center. It looked like an easy double but Sheffield stopped at first base and immediately walked off the field. Apparently, his right hamstring was bothering him again.

The Mets got some outstanding offense for a change. They were all over Kyle Lohse for 5 of their 9 runs. He couldn’t make it out of the third inning. David Wright and Angel Pagan did the most damage getting three hits apiece and both homered in the game.

Nelson Figueroa got another chance today and made the most of it going 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of Niese. Bobby Parnell then came in and threw 3 scoreless innings. After the game, Jerry Manuel said that they’re stretching Parnell out in anticipation that he’ll be moving to the rotation.

The Mets leave for San Diego feeling a little better about themselves after taking a beating at home by the D-Backs and splitting the two-game series with the Cardinals.
