Mets Early 2011 – Next Few Weeks Could Impact Team For Years

The Mets Are Teasing Us Again?

The Mets are now 22-24. A .478 winning percentage which leaves them about 4.5 – 5.5 games out of the wild card. At this rate the Mets will end up going 77-85. They will need to reverse this record to compete for a wild card. Maybe? So even after this weekends Subway Series we just have to find between 5 & 7 wins. Somewhere. It’s do-able but who will be doing it is the even bigger question.

Some Tough Decisions for Sandy Alderson.

If your team is only 5 games out of the wild card coming into the trading deadline what do you do? Your taking a big risk by holding onto free agents to be Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes. Trading Beltran and Reyes now may be the most logical thing to do although your telling the fan base your giving up on the year.

The loss of Reyes will be taken hard by the fans but we’ve never won with these players anyway. Now may be the time to unload them when their value is high. I wouldn’t want to be in Sandy’s shoes. Although, if it was me, I would make the tough decision to trade Reyes. I would really need to be overwhelmed with the package though, but if I could rebuild the starting pitching staff now…

My feeling is, Sandy Alderson, the former Marine, will pull the trigger on a trade for Reyes regardless of what the fans think. Reyes will never be more valuable than he is now. He brings energy to the club, is fun to watch and helps fill the seats but so does winning. I think we’ll forget Reyes pretty quickly if the Mets make a playoff run without him. Fred Wilpon Trashes Mets in Interview

Mets owner Fred Wilpon decided to do an extensive interview with Jeffrey Toobin on New Yorker magazine to rehabilitate his image. Obviously, he’s been under fire financially and painted as a crook by the Madoff trustee. That may or may not be true. I don’t know.

What better way to clear your good name than doing an extensive profile with a respected magazine journalist? Well, sometimes it’s better to just keep your mouth shut if you don’t have anything good to say. This just appears to be another example of the bumbling Mets owner being disconnected from reality. Or maybe living in his own reality that nobody else ever gets to visit.

The profile is about Wilpon’s rise from rags to riches. Frankly, it’s a pretty boring story. If you go directly to page 7, you’ll see that it isn’t so boring when it comes to his feelings about some prominent Mets players. David Wright isn’t a superstar. Jose Reyes won’t get Carl Crawford money in free agency. Wilpon was a schmuck for signing Carlos Beltran to the contract they agreed on and isn’t the player he used to be. The Mets won their first shutout of the season in dreadful playing conditions. The rain was falling throughout the game and had to be some of the worst playing conditions I can remember seeing. There were literally puddles on the infield. There’s no way they should have been playing that game.

Jon Niese had an excellent start going 7 innings only allowing 6 hits and a walk. He looked tremendous even in the bad weather with his control working really well for him. It was a great performance and lowered his ERA to 4.39.

The top of the Mets batting order was working too. Jose Reyes had 3 hits and raised his average to .322. But once again Justin Turner had the timely big hit with a 2-run double in the sixth inning. He’s hitting .333 and seems to have a knack for getting hits and the right time.

The Mets and Nats wrap up the short series tomorrow afternoon.

Dodgers 4 – Mets 2 May 8, 2011

The Mets couldn’t get much offense going against Clayton Kershaw. They only had 8 hits and 4 walks in the game and left 10 on base. Only Jose Reyes had an extra base hit for the Mets, another triple that scored Daniel Murphy in the bottom of the ninth.

R.A. Dickey was decent but not outstanding again going 7 innings and allowing 3 earned runs. He did allow 10 hits and 2 walks so he had trouble going throughout the game.

The Mets won the series despite the loss today and head to Colorado for a three game series.

Mets 4 – Dodgers 2 May 7, 2011

The Mets won their third straight game, won the series against the Dodgers, and have a chance for a sweep tomorrow. The big story in this game was that Chris Young had trouble getting loose in the bullpen before the game and was scratched. Dillon Gee got the last minute call to start. He seemed to be in trouble in every inning but went 5.1 innings and allowed only 2 runs.

The Mets offense had 9 hits and 5 walks. Jose Reyes was 2 for 5 but fell asleep off first base and got picked off by Dioneer Navarro in an embarrassing play. Then he broke from second to third on a ball hit to the shortstop. He definitely didn’t have his head in the game on the bases tonight.

The big hit came in the bottom of the eighth from Justin Turner. The bases were loaded and he hit a long ball to center that went over Matt Kemp’s head for a long single scoring 2 runs.

What Most Fans are Really Paying Attention to this Weekend

Amidst heavy financial burdens, trade rumors, the aftermath of a messy divorce, and an impressive, yet flawed hit streak, there is actually baseball being played in Queens this weekend between the Mets and the Dodgers.

Much like the Mets, the Dodgers are an under-achieving team in flux at the moment. They have a new manager, are struggling to play .500 baseball, and are faced with the possibility of MLB seizing control of the organization at the end of May when owner Frank McCourt fails to submit the payroll. Although the Mets’ financial situation may not be as desperate as the Dodgers’ at the moment, these two franchises seem to be mirroring each other from the left to right coast.

Despite the off-field issues of each franchise, the attention of both teams fan bases, baseball wise, lie in two individual stories. For Met fans, the electrifying play of Jose Reyes is one of the few highlights of the young season thus far. However, his play has been overshadowed by his looming trade prospects. For Dodger fans, Andre Ethier’s 30 game hit streak has enamored despite the team’s lackluster play as of late. In the eyes of many fans outside of L.A., Ethier’s feat up to this point may not seem as arduous considering he took a day off on Thursday, something Joe DiMaggio never did during his 56 game hit streak. Video: ESPN on Mets Jose Reyes Future

Here’s some video of Baseball Tonight’s Aaron Boone talking about the Mets future with Jose Reyes. He suggests trading Reyes for the long-term benefit of the team. Boone also goes on to suggest that the San Francisco Giants are a team that would be a great fit for Reyes.

I’ve always resisted the talk of a fire sale over the last couple of years. But I’m on board now. The long-term deals the Mets have in place are coming to a close for the most part. It’s time to start making some deals to re-stock the Mets for the future. They certainly don’t look like a team that’s going anywhere this year so they might as well try to bring in some young talent.
