Pirates 8 – Mets 5 June 1, 2009

The story of this game is that the Mets were hitting and scoring early, but the bullpen blew the game in the eighth inning. It was reminiscent of a 2008 game. Livan Hernandez was back to his average self again going 5.2 innings and giving up 3 runs to raise his ERA to 4.33.

The Mets put up 5 runs in the first three inings and looked like they were on their way to a beat down of the Pirates. But they only got one hit after the third inning. We should’ve know it was a sign of trouble when the offense was led by Jeremy Reed and Wilson Valdez with 2 hits apiece.

J.J. Putz was awful again giving up 4 runs without getting an out on four straight hits. He was out early before the game working with Dan Warthen but it didn’t help at all. Supposedly, they’re trying to get him to stop tipping his pitches. They need to work on finding the velocity that he’s lost before the pitch tipping issue. He’s just been terrible.

The Pirates scrapped their way back from being down 5-0 in the third inning. This was a really ugly loss.

Mets 6 – Nationals 1 May 26, 2009

Tonight’s game was the Livan Hernandez show. He went the distance only giving up a solo homer to Adam Dunn. He gave up 9 hits and 1 walk and threw 127 pitches in the game.

The Mets offense was solid but the big hit came from Gary Sheffield. For the second night in a row he hit a 3-run homer, this one a line shot to straight away left field. His average is up to .291 for the season and he’s filling in quite capably as the Mets cleanup hitter.

The Mets take the second game of three from the Nationals and go for the sweep tomorrow night behind Johan Santana.

Dodgers 2 – Mets 1 May 20, 2009

The Dodgers completed the sweep of the Mets tonight and sent New York to their fourth straight loss. You never would’ve thought the game would be 1-1 in the eighth inning of a game that Livan Hernandez and Jeff Weaver started. I thought it would’ve been 8-6 or something like that.

Hernandez pitched really well going 7 innings and giving up 1 run on 93 pitches. I’m shocked that I’m writing that because he appears to be pitching batting practice out there. It’s hard to understand how he doesn’t get shelled in every start. The problem came in the eighth inning with J.J. Putz… again. He gave up 2 walks and 2 hits including 1 run. That was the game.

Once again, the Mets had basically no offense. Carlos Beltran was 2 for 3 with a double but the Mets only had 7 hits in the game.

For those of you that couldn’t stay up to watch the game Daniel Murphy was fantastic at first base. He made all the plays including an unassisted double play. Clearly, he can pick it at first. If they’re trying to find a way to get his bat into the lineup… Consider that problem solved. He had to feel great about that after looking like such a bafoon in the outfield all season.

Jose Reyes left the game after his second at-bat. He was running out a ground out and his right leg injury was aggrevated. He limped off the field and immediately came out of the game. Ramon Martinez played the rest of the game at short. It looks like this injury is more serious than they originally thought.

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid a sweep in their last game on the west coast before a day off then a series in Boston. Hernandez wasn’t very good in his last start against the Giants giving up 5 runs in 5 innings. He’ll need to do better than that against the Dodgers. Weaver has been working out of the bullpen and making a few starts this season. This is the type of pitcher that the Mets really need to jump on early.

Mets 8 – Giants 6 May 15, 2009

Livan Hernandez stunk tonight giving up 5 runs in the first two innings. He did settle down to get through 5 innings giving up 8 hits. The way he was pitching the game looked like it might be over early for the Mets. But the Mets came back again and are showing some real signs of being a difficult team to hold down.

Both Jerry Manuel and Giants manager Bruce Bochy were thrown out of the game by home plate umpire Doug Eddings. He was having a bad game behind the plate tonight and both managers let him know about it.

Tonight was another monster game for David Wright. He was 3 for 5 with 4 RBI’s including a huge bases loaded double that cleared the bases. He’s been red-hot and clutch raising his average to .341. He also added another stolen base tonight, his fifth in the two games against the Giants.

The Mets scored 7 runs from the sixth inning on to mount another come back victory. This team is hot going into two national TV games this weekend and with Johan Santana on the mound tomorrow.

Livan Hernandez (3-1 5.08) vs. Tim Lincecum (3-1 3.25)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: This game certainly appears to be a big mismatch on paper. Lincecum, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, going up against Hernandez. But that’s why they play the games. Lincecum has pitched very well lately and hasn’t lost a game since April 12th. Jose Reyes is out again with soreness in his right calf debunking the rumors that he was being punished last night for his bad base running. Also, Jeremy Reed gets the start at first base. That should be interesting…
