D-Backs 4 – Mets 3 July 21, 2010

June 11, 2010: Jason Bay in action during the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 loss versus the New York Mets at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe D-Backs finish off the sweep of the Mets in 14 innings. It was too late and I was too upset to write about it last night. I still am…

Oliver Perez made his return to the game from the disabled list. He registered 1.1 IP and didn’t allow a run. Although he did give up 1 hit and 2 walks. Typical.

Jerry Manuel held a short team meeting before the game. A lot of good that did. The Mets are now 1-6 on this road trip and really should be 0-7 if it wasn’t for a blown call by Phil Cuzzi. I’m completely disgusted.

Mets Perez Returns, Turner Out

In a surprising move, the Mets activated Oliver Perez and shipped out Justin Turner. Turner heads back to Triple-A Buffalo. The Mets will continue to carry three catchers plus Alex Cora, Chris Carter, and Jeff Francoeur on the bench.

Keeping three catchers on the roster seems like an unsustainable strategy. Josh Thole has earned the right to be on the Mets roster. Rod Barajas has earned a trip to the waiver wire. It’s that simple.

As far as Perez goes, we’ll see how Manuel uses him. I have a feeling he’ll be doing mop-up duty and that’s about it.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe day we all feared is here. It looks like Oliver Perez will be activated from the disabled list today. Likely, Josh Thole will be sent down to Triple-A Buffalo but we’ll find out for sure later this afternoon.

Perez threw in the bullpen in front of Dan Warthen and Jerry Manuel yesterday. From their comments, they didn’t sound impressed. Manuel said that Perez will be the second lefty out of the bullpen and he’ll try to find spots to use him. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Perez’ return to the team.

I’m really disappointed to see Thole leave, if that’s what they decide to do. I understand that he has options and that’s a factor. But Rod Barajas certainly isn’t in the Mets long term plans. And there’s hardly anything left on his 1-year contract. They could easily release Barajas and go with Thole and Henry Blanco.

Mets Oliver Perez Bullpen Session Today

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsOliver Perez arrived in Arizona yesterday but hasn’t been activated from the disabled list yet. The plan is for him to work a bullpen session this afternoon and be evaluated by the team. Perez has the right to demand that his rehab period end but hasn’t done that yet. If the Mets don’t like what they see, they may ask him if he’ll extend his rehab.

Perez has been on the DL since June 1 with knee tendinitis. The injury and DL trip was so suspicious that MLB investigated but ultimately decided it was legitimate.

We’ve heard comments from Jerry Manuel that Perez will return to the bullpen when he comes off the DL. Hisanori Takahashi will make his next start in Los Angeles on Thursday despite his ineffectiveness.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIf about a month ago you asked a Mets fan who was the most pleasant surprise this season, you’d have a lot of responses. R.A. Dickey. Ike Davis. Angel Pagan.

All very deserving names. Another name that would’ve been on that list is 35-year-old Japanese import Hisanori Takahashi.

He wasn’t untouchable coming out of the bullpen, but he was more than serviceable, posting a 3.12 ERA as a reliever. When John Maine and Oliver Perez had to be pulled from the rotation due to a combination of injuries and ineffectiveness, Takahashi was chosen to take one of the open spots in the rotation.

His first two starts were outstanding, against two of the best offensive teams in baseball. Against the Yankees in his first start, he shutout the Yankees for six innings. In his next start against NL East rival Philadelphia, he did the same. Continue reading “Mets’ Hisanori Takahashi Struggles, Keeps Rotation Spot”

Mets Links: Lee, Koosman, Perez, Delgado

Here are some links to review as we head into the last series before the All-Star break. The Mets are currently 3 games back of the Braves so a sweep would leave the Mets in a tie for first place in the NL East. I think any of us would’ve taken this position for the Mets before the season started.

Mets’ Beltran and Perez Recovering

St. Lucie Mets

Last night Carlos Beltran and Oliver Perez played a rehab game for St. Lucie. For Beltran it was the second straight game he played the full game since his knee surgery. He’s expected to return to the Mets on July 15 in San Francisco. He hasn’t played for the Mets since Oct. 4, 2009.

Perez pitched for St. Lucie going 5.2 IP for the win. He allowed 2 hits and 2 runs while getting 7 strikeouts. He’s been on the Mets’ DL since June5 with knee tendinitis. It’s unclear when he’ll be returning to the Mets and whether he’ll be headed back to the bullpen or not.
