The Mets had six players file for arbitration today and John Maine was the first player to agree to a new contract. Maine will return to the Mets on a one-year/$3.3 million deal plus bonuses that could go to $225,000 based on the number of starts that he makes.

The other players are: Pedro Feliciano, Jeff Francoeur, Sean Green, and Angel Pagan.

I thought it was time to move on from Maine and non-tender him. I don’t think anyone would have thought that Maine deserved a raise coming off his 15 start 7-6 season last year. But he will be getting a raise from his $2.6 million 2009 salary. It’s funny how baseball contracts work sometimes. Or maybe the Mets are just that desperate for starting pitching.

There are some huge names on the arbitration list this year including Tim Lincecum and Felix Hernandez. It should be really interesting to see where they end up.

The Mets players in arbitration had 2009 salaries of:

  • Feliciano- $1.615 million
  • Francoeur- $3.375 million
  • Green- $0.471 million
  • Pagan- $0.575 million

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Mets put Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano through waivers but both were claimed by team(s). Apparently, the Mets were unable to work out a suitable trade for the players and decided to pull them back. Both players will have to remain with the Mets for the rest of the season.

That’s bad news for Gary Sheffield that’s starting to see diminishing playing time as he doesn’t figure into the Mets plans for 2010. I’m sure that he would’ve loved to go to an American League team in the playoff race despite his comments about wanting to stay with the Mets.

Mets Figueroa Designated For Assignment

Immediately after pitching six innings against the Brewers yesterday and giving up three runs, Nelson Figueroa was designated for assignment by the Mets. He had a nice spot start for Mike Pelfrey who is not going on the disabled list but resting after feeling some forearm tendinitis.

Casey Fossum was called up from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Figueroa on the roster. So Darren O’Day and Figueroa are now on waivers for the Mets.

I have to admit that I was surprised when I read that Figueroa was designated. He offers some good versatility in the Mets bullpen and has been pretty solid in every role that the Mets have asked of him. Fossum is a second lefty for the Mets bullpen that’s been a source of concern, but I got the feeling that the Mets weren’t overly concerned about Pedro Feliciano being the only lefty in the bullpen.

Hopefully, Figueroa will get picked up by a team that could use him at the major league level. If not, he could end up in Buffalo again and possibly back with the Mets at some point this season.

Padres Over Mets 6-5 April 13, 2009

Heath BellThe San Diego Padres managed to spoil the Mets grand opening of Citi Field by winning a close one 6-5. Mike Pelfrey definitely didn’t have it for the second start in a row. He went 5 innings giving up five runs on 8 hits and 2 walks. Jody Gerut led off the game with a home run to right field and we knew that we could be in for a long night.

The Mets did manage to put together a four run rally in the fifth inning capped by a 3-run homer by David Wright. But it wasn’t enough.

In the top of the sixth Ryan Church misplayed a fly ball off his glove. The runner, Luis Rodriguez, ended up scoring on a balk of all things by Pedro Feliciano. The Mets are finding new ways to lose in the early going this season.

The Padres win their fifth straight game as the Mets drop to 3-4. Heath Bell ended up getting his wish, he got the first save at Citi Field.

Marlins Over Mets 5-4 In Walkoff April 10, 2009

The good news for the Mets tonight is that John Maine looked pretty good. He went five innings giving up two runs, both on solo homers from Hanely Ramirez and Dan Uggla. He threw 83 pitches and 54 strikes. That’s a nice game for Maine who struggled at times during spring training.

The Mets offense came from Daniel Murphy, Carlos Beltran, and Ryan Church who had three hits each tonight. But as a team the Mets were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. That’s been plaguing the team throughout the early season. Beltran had a solo homer in the sixth to put the Mets on the board and an RBI ground out in the seventh.

Jeremy Reed came through with a huge pinch-hit single in the ninth to tie the game. But it wasn’t enough as Pedro Feliciano and Darren O’Day coughed up the lead in the bottom of the frame. Jorge Cantu singled in the winning run in the form of Emilio Bonifacio. Bonifacio looks like he’s going to be a good player. He’s got blazing speed.

The Marlins are still undefeated at 4-0 while the Mets drop to 2-2.

Mets Sign P Ken Takahashi

Ken Takahashi signed a minor league deal with the Mets only days after the lefty was released by the Toronto Blue Jays. Takahashi is 39 years old and only pitched in one exhibition game for the Blue Jays. He’ll be an insurance policy at Triple-A Buffalo in case the Mets find as they get into the season that they really need a lefty in the bullpen. Currently, Pedro Feliciano is the only lefty reliever on the team.

Mets, Feliciano Agree To One Year Contract

Pedro Feliciano was the Mets last arbitration eligible player for the 2009 season without a contract. He agreed to a 1-year/$1.6125 million contract this week.

The lefty reliever finished the 2008 season at 3-4 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. Last season was Feliciano’s worst as a Met since he started pitching regularly in 2006.

Feliciano is a good lefty specialist. Right-handed batters hit him hard last season, having a .357 batting average against him versus ..210 for lefties. He also got hit much harder during the day (6.60 ERA) than he did at night (3.05 ERA). It’s also worth noting that he was miserable after the All-Star break, having a 6.27 ERA versus 2.86 ERA before the break.

This is an important season for Feliciano to establish himself as a solid reliever that can succeed throughout the entire season.
