Preview: Mets at Phillies April 30, 2010

New York Mets (13-9)  at Philadelphia Phillies (12-9) 7:05 pm

Jon Niese (0-1 3.68) vs. Kyle Kendrick (0-0 7.71)

TV: WPIX   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are hot! They’ve won seven in a row. The Phillies have lost four of their last six games. Niese has only allowed 1 ER over his last 11 IP over two starts. Kendrick has been rocked in three of his four starts this season giving up 16 ER in 18.2 IP. This is the most anticipated series against the Phillies that we’ve had in several years. The first place Mets are in Philly through Sunday.

Mets 2010 TV Schedule Is National

ESPN (UK)

The day off today gave me a chance to catch up on a column from Richard Sandomir for the Times that I haven’t gotten to yet this week. Between the hoopla surrounding the Mets resurgence and working hard this week, I just hadn’t gotten to it. But the day off is a good chance to address an important topic: the Mets have been on national TV a lot this season.

It’s especially surprising that ESPN and FOX would put the Mets on so frequently considering how pathetic they were last season. Apparently, the network execs expected a comeback when they worked out the season scheduling. Continue reading “Mets 2010 TV Schedule Is National”

Mets Wrap Up Successful Homestand – Look Ahead

The Mets have had a big home stand against the Cubs, Braves, and Dodgers. David Daniels writes that the next series in Philadelphia could set the tone for the rest of the season.

Are we getting excited yet!?! Our Met’s are now on a 6 game winning streak and hopefully we can make it a 7 game winning streak before heading off to Philly. This was a wildly successful homestand.

Yes, It’s a little early in the year but I’m so looking forward to this weekend series with the Phillies. I love the rivalry. Considering the rough start the Mets had, catching the Phillies will make this series that much more entertaining.

Jon Niese will open the series Friday followed by Mike Pelfrey and then Johan Santana. The Phillies pitchers have yet to be announced. This lines up our top two pitchers for a crucial series that will set the tone for the entire year. Will the Phillies embarrass the Mets or will the Mets show they can play toe-to-toe with the defending NL Champs and leave Philly in first? Mets’ Mike Pelfrey Lick Count

New York Mets starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey and catcher Brian Schneider in the fifth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js54 licks through 6 innings

I don’t know if that “Lick Count” is entirely accurate but it’s a new statistic we should be working on to see what percentage of licks works best in certain situations and maybe have the struggling starters implement the lick schedule.

But seriously – We’ve now seen 4 of the 5 starters and Oliver Perez goes today. Since this team’s success is going to rely on how well the starterrs pitch I’ve been watching them closely this week. As expected, a good outing by Johan Santana.

Good outings by Jon Niese and Mike Pelfrey have eased my nerves a little. The bad outing by John Maine definitely worries me as, from what I’m hearing, he might not ever find his true form. Continue reading “Mets’ Mike Pelfrey Lick Count”

Video: Fox Sports 2010 NL East Preview

Here’s the annual video preview of the National League East from Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. It’s disappointing that the Mets are an afterthought for Rosenthal this year. He lists the Phillies as the early leader and the Braves as a contender. Even the Marlins are mentioned.

Maybe it’s good for the Mets to go into the season without the high expectations of the mainstream media like they did in 2009. We’ll see…

Poll: Mets Fans Hate Yankees And Phillies Equally?

The view from behind home plate in the upper deck.

I’ve been thinking about the nightmare scenario for Mets fans for a while now. What I’m talking about is a World Series featuring the Phillies and Yankees. I alluded to this idea in my post a couple of weeks ago, that I don’t understand Mets fans rooting for the Yankees. Now that the Phillies are in the Series again, and the Yankees are on the cusp, it’s time to get serious about this issue.

I’m still holding out a sliver of hope that the Angels can pull off a miracle in the headquarters of the Evil Empire. I still have such fond memories of 2004!I haven’t totally given up on the Angels and I’ll be rooting for them. But winning two at Yankee Stadium will be tough. 2009 MLB Playoffs Without The Mets

Major League Baseball

Although I shouldn’t be, I’m enjoying the MLB playoffs this year without the Mets. I think the reason why is because I expected the Mets to be in the playoffs in 2007 and 2008. Obviously, I had no such delusion this season.

Keeping up with other Mets fans has been interesting on my Twitter account. I haven’t seen any of us hoping that the Phillies take the series over Colorado. But I have seen some Mets fans hoping that the Yankees can go all the way.

I just don’t get that… I suppose it’s possible for a casual fan to be a “New York” fan. That’s what I’m attributing it to. But I could never see myself hoping the Yankees get another World Series championship. Enough is enough. If you’re a Mets fan hoping the Yankees go all the way, comment below about why that is. I’m curious to hear your opinion. Continue reading “2009 MLB Playoffs Without The Mets”
