Daily Mets News: Reyes Rocks Marlins And More

It’s hard to get excited about the results of a spring training game but Jose Reyes went off on the Marlins today. He hit two homers and had six RBI’s. But the great news is that he’s bringing back Professor Reyes after a one year absence. I don’t know why but I loved the Professor Reyes bit. I thought it was a lot of fun.

Onto the Mets news:

  • Tim Redding is still recovering from shoulder pain and won’t throw off a mound for a few more days.
  • Sean Green cut the nail on his middle finger on his pitching hand. He won’t miss any time though.
  • WFAN’s Mike Francesa is broadcasting from Tradition Field today and tomorrow. He’s got tons of audio clips of the the Mets that I’ll be linking to later today. And he’s trying to get Ryan Church and David Wright on tomorrow. Both of which he’s feuded with.
  • Johan Santana was scratched from his Friday start due to tightness in his pitching elbow. He’ll still get five starts in before opening day and doesn’t anticipate missing any other starts this spring.
  • Babes Love Baseball does their season preview of the Mets in haiku form.
  • The Mets received more than 803,000 entries for the lottery to purchase tickets for the home opener.

Manuel Works Mets, Media With Mind Games

Jerry ManuelJerry Manuel has been busy working the local beat writers to his own ends this spring. And as such, he’s been working us in the blogsphere that write and talk with friends and fellow fans about the Mets.

Is he really going to hit Luis Castillo leadoff? Is he really going to platoon Ryan Church and Fernando Tatis in right field? Does he really think Daniel Murphy is a better hitter than Ryan Church? Is he really going to play Brian Schneider more frequently than last season? Why is he discussing these issues with the media before telling the players that are impacted?

Manuel is proving himself to be a master manipulator, using the media and us for his own purposes. He’s verbalized the fact that he’s going to challenge his players this year. We just didn’t know he was going to do it through the media.

Although Manuel took over the Mets last June, we were used to three plus years of Willie Randolph’s stoic personality. Randolph didn’t give us much except a quiet, occasionally bewildered, discussion of the day’s events.

Manuel is using all of us to push, pull, and prod the players. He’s poking at them with his comments, giving confidence to some while putting others on notice. He clearly knows what he wants from the players and is busy preparing them mentally as well as physically for the season.

I like what he’s doing this spring. Each player needs to be treated differently, in the way that will draw the most out of them during the season. Castillo and Murphy are getting confidence building comments. Church, Jose Reyes, and Ramon Castro are being challenged to improve.

While I applaud Manuel’s ability to read his players, I take his comments with a grain of salt. I anticipate that Reyes will get the vast majority of games batting leadoff, and Fernando Tatis will get most of his playing time in left field. I’d like to see Manuel take advantage of Ramon Castro’s big bat at least twice a week. But Manuel is sure showing that he’s a manipulator… He’s gone gangsta on the media.

There are plenty of stories to report about the Mets this morning from Port St. Lucie. They played their first intra-squad game yesterday with Jerry Manuel watching carefully from behind the shortstop position.

Onto the Mets in the news:

  • Ryan Church talked to  the media about Manuel telling the media that Fernando Tatis will see time in right field. Manuel said he didn’t care about the players reaction to his comments. He’s trying to put the team in the best position to win.
  • The Mets are likely to announce a player development agreement with the Mexico City Red Devils of the Mexican League. That’s the team that Ricardo Rincon played for last season.
  • Joel Sherman of the Post writes about Johan Santana mentoring Oliver Perez and Ryan Church downplaying talk of a right field platoon. This is a good, short read.
  • David Lennon of Newsday writes about Fernando Tatis’ aching palm and Ryan Church receiving an “I (heart) New York” t-shirt.
  • Ben Shipgel of the NY Times does a tremendous profile of new third base coach Razor Shines.
  • Ryan Fagan of The Sporting News does his 2009 Mets preview. He predicts a wild card berth for the Mets.

  • The starting outfielders are working out on Field 7 which is modeled after the Citi Field outfield dimensions from NY Times.
  • Jose Valentin is still trying to win a spot on the major league roster. But he’s okay with playing and coaching at Triple-A Buffalo if it comes to that from NY Times.
  • Daniel Murphy playing everyday in left field is the topic at Ontheblack.com.
  • Joel Sherman of the NY Post has two posts today about the RF and LF platoon issue. And he says that Freddy Garcia hasn’t looked great so far this spring.

  • Carlos Muniz joins the ranks of Mets pitchers working on a split finger fastball this spring.

Mets Agree To Contracts With Church, Pagan

Two more arbitration eligible players agreed to contract terms with the Mets today. Ryan Church is getting a 1-year/$2.8 million deal and Angel Pagan got a 1-year/$575,000 deal.

Angel Pagan started the season really hot in left field last season before an injury in May in Los Angeles. He lost the rest of the season to a torn labrum in his shoulder. He’s currently recovering from the surgery.

Ryan Church also started the season well in right field last season before suffering a concussion on Atlanta. He wasn’t the same player afterward and there was much criticism for the way the Mets handled the injury. Church also suffered a nasty concussion during spring training last season. The combination of the two really left his season with unfulfilled promise.

Only John Maine and Pedro Feliciano remain arbitration eligible.

Report: Mets And Dodgers Talk Andruw Jones Trade

Buster Olney is reporting at ESPN that the Mets and Dodgers are talking about a deal that would send Andruw Jones to New York. Olney writes that the Dodgers would be willing to eat some of the money left on the last year of Jones’ contract.

Jones has been terrible for two seasons in a row now. He gained a lot of weight and lost several steps in the outfield. Olney surmises that the Mets would put Jones in right field supplanting Ryan Church.

I can’t figure out how this makes sense for the Mets unless the Dodgers are willing to take Luis Castillo in return. But Olney writes that the Dodgers likely have no interest in Castillo because Blake DeWitt is playing second base.

Omar Minaya has made some bad signings during his career but he’s usually pretty saavy in the trade market. I’ll be surprised if he’s willing to take on Andruw Jones at this point in his career.

Mets Tender Contracts To Five Players

The Mets decided to offer contracts to all five arbitration elegible players. Ryan Church, John Maine, Pedro Feliciano, Duaner Sanchez, and Jeremy Reed were all offered contracts.

The Mets have a history of agreeing to contracts without going to salary arbitration with their players. Last year Oliver Perez won $6.75 million in arbitration and that was the first time the Mets went to arbitration in 16 years. After the Mets got spanked there, expect them to agree to contracts with all five players before the deadline on Feb. 1.
