As painful as it was… it is over. Finally, at last, about time, whatever phrase you want to use. This road trip has finally come to a screeching halt (on a semi-positive note) but nowhere near the results I (and most likely you) expected.

Thursday, May 13th: Mets 1, Marlins 2
Friday, May 14th: Mets 2, Marlins 7
Saturday, May 15th: Mets 5, Marlins 7
Sunday, May 16th: Mets 8, Marlins 10
Monday, May 17th: Mets 3, Braves 2
Tuesday, May 18th: Mets 2, Braves 3
Wednesday, May 19th: Mets 3, Nationals 5
Thursday, May 20th: Mets 10, Nationals 7

Predicted Road Trip Record: 4-4

Actual Road Trip Record: 2-6 Continue reading “Mets Road Trip Review – May 13-20, 2010”

Marlins 10 – Mets 8 May 16, 2010

New York Mets at Cincinnati Reds

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets lost their fifth straight game as the Marlins finished off a four game sweep. Jon Niese started the game and wasn’t very sharp for the second start in a row. He left the game due to injury after fielding a ground ball. It looked like it might have been the same hamstring that ruined his season last year. He ended up going 2 IP and giving up 2 ER.

Hisanori Takahashi relived Niese and went 3 IP, which precludes his from taking Oliver Perez’ spot in the rotation. The Mets will have to dip into Triple-A Buffalo to replace Perez.

Fernando Nieve got rocked in the seventh inning for 3 ER on 2 hits a 1 walk. His ERA is up to 4.64 as he’s cooled off quite a bit from his hot start in the bullpen.

The defense was pretty sloppy in this one too. David Wright and Niese both had errors. But Wright had several plays that he didn’t make at third that were scored as hits by the Florida scorekeeper.

The Mets did have 12 hits and 4 walks in the game. The lineup featured Chris Carter hitting cleanup and playing right field. Jeff Francoeur got a “mental health” day off but he did end up pinch hitting. The big shock is that Gary Matthews, Jr. went into right field and went 2 for 2 with his first RBI of the year.

The Mets head to Atlanta for a two game series starting tomorrow night.

New York Mets Charities Including Oliver Perez

Wounded Warrior Project

After watching the Mets throw away lots of money on one of their favorite charities, Oliver Perez, I wondered what other charities do the Mets contribute to. Since we are not spending our money at Citi Field, lets help out some of these charities.

Here are some Mets charities I located from around the web:

.

Mets Charities

.

  • The Mets main listed charity is their foundation at Sportsphilanthropy.com. The projects goal is to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity by the year 2015, a worthwhile goal especially since they are in the business of sports.
  • Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling back a charity at www.pitchinforagoodcause.org. Starting in 2010, Gary, Keith, and Ron have united to support one special organization, The Nourishing Kitchen of NYC, a community food program that strives to achieve nutrition for all in NYC. To learn more about the program you can visit Eatwellnyc.org.
  • Wounded Warrior Project – Jose Reyes and David Wright have both lent their names to this project. The mission of Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors. Major League Baseball players are honoring the sacrifices made by our nation’s wounded warriors by launching an exclusive line of military-themed licensed products to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Washington Nationals Unlikely To Continue Success in 2010

Top first year draft pick Stasburg joins the Washington Nationals

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsEditor’s note: This is a guest post from Brad Templeman, author of Baseball In-Depth. Brad focuses on statistical analysis of all 30 MLB teams. You can follow Brad on Twitter.

The Nationals are playing very well right now.  They’re winning against quality teams and in every type of game.  As someone who often roots for the underdog, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Nationals stay in the NL East race for a while, but I think their ride near the top of the division won’t last too much longer.  They clearly have a great chance to end up with a much better record than they did in 2009, when they went 59-103, but getting close to 90 wins still seems beyond their capabilities.

Their record is an astonishing 20-15 and they are only 1 game behind the Phillies.  Even after their big win against the Rockies last night, they still have a negative run differential (was -16, now -8 after their big win).  While there are a number of reasons why their smashing success is unlikely to continue, I’ll just touch on a few here. Baseball Day Games – Why Can’t We Have More of Them?

Casey Stengel;Roger Craig

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsEven though both the Mets and Yankees had lost their games before 5pm, I thoroughly enjoyed my workday and that was because there were so many day games on today. I’m left to wonder if this is what it was like for the previous generations of baseball fans?

Today more than half of baseball had started playing by 1pm. I started by listening to the pre-game show on WFAN live from Citi Field at around noon. Since this was a day game there were large groups of kids in attendance and you could hear them chanting “Let’s go Mets!” and generally having a good time at the park. It’s a great sound to hear in an office. Continue reading “Baseball Day Games – Why Can’t We Have More of Them?”

Fast Players Hit Fewer 2B and 3B With Runners on First?

MLB: Giants vs Mets MAY 09

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsEditor’s Note: This is re-posted, with permission, from Cyril Morong’s Cybermetrics blog, a great site focusing on Sabermetric analysis. This was originally written on July 20, 2008. This is particularly appropriate for the current Mets lineup with Jose Reyes batting third.

If a fast player hits a ball hard and/or far down the line or into to the gap and there is a runner on first if that runner is slow or not fast, he might hold up at 3B. The fast player will have to hold at 2B. Had there been no runner on, then he might have hit a triple. A similar story could be told for doubles. So do fast players hit fewer 2Bs and 3Bs if there is a man on first base?

First, I identify the fastest players using the triple-to-double ratio. Just triples is not good enough since some fast players either don’t hit the ball enough or far enough to get triples. But by using this ratio we are looking at long hits when the batter has a chance to turn a double into a triple. Fast players will do this more than slow players. Mets Links: MLB.tv and MLB At-Bat 2010

My iPhone

This is a brief mid-day Mets links post today. As a matter of fact, this post isn’t specific to the Mets at all. There were a couple of good baseball technology posts that I wanted to link to. If you’re a baseball and simultaneously a gadget junkie, this is the post for you.

DavidDaniels.com– Our own David Daniels writes about the MLB At-Bat 2010 app for the iPhone

Fangraphs– Dave Cameron writes that the only way to watch MLB.tv is on the PlayStation 3.
