Mets’ Mike Pelfrey Lick Count

I don’t know if that “Lick Count” is entirely accurate but it’s a new statistic we should be working on to see what percentage of licks works best in certain situations and maybe have the struggling starters implement the lick schedule.

But seriously – We’ve now seen 4 of the 5 starters and Oliver Perez goes today. Since this team’s success is going to rely on how well the starterrs pitch I’ve been watching them closely this week. As expected, a good outing by Johan Santana.

Good outings by Jon Niese and Mike Pelfrey have eased my nerves a little. The bad outing by John Maine definitely worries me as, from what I’m hearing, he might not ever find his true form. Continue reading “Mets’ Mike Pelfrey Lick Count”

Mets’ Ruben Tejada Sent Back To Minors

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets sent shortstop Ruben Tejada back to Triple-A Buffalo after last night’s win against the Washington Nationals. Tejada got his first career major league hit in the game as well.

Tejada played in 3 games, going 1 for 6. He looks like he’s got some skills in the field and his stroke at the plate is solid as well, especially for a 20 year-old. Although it’s too bad he’s leaving, I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing more of him this season.

The good news is that Tejada leaving the active roster makes room for Jose Reyes to return today. I was hoping thinking that Luis Castillo might go on the disabled list to make room for Reyes so Tejada could stick around.

Mets’ Jose Reyes To Return Saturday

Jose Reyes will come back to New York and return to the lineup against the Nationals after playing in rehab games in Florida.

Jose Reyes has been rehabbing in Florida and getting in shape after his bout with a thyroid problem. He’s playing in one more game today and then coming back to New York tomorrow.

The Mets plan to have Reyes in the lineup on Saturday against the Nationals. That’s the first day he’s eligible to come off the disabled list after being added retroactively to March 26.

From NY Times:

“Barring any setbacks, we anticipate that, the physical conditioning part of it is going extremely well,” Manager Jerry Manuel said. “He’s getting enough at-bats, so we will do another evaluation on Thursday after he plays in St. Lucie.”

I think that we all like Alex Cora, but hate seeing him on the field everyday. Reyes’ return is going to be huge boost to this team in the field and the clubhouse. I can’t wait to see him back out there on Saturday.

Mets 2010 Opening Day Preview of Offense

When the Mets put up 9 hits and 7 runs on Josh Johnson and the Marlins on opening day, I wasn’t really surprised. This is a team that can hit. Even the injury depleted 2009 team led the league with a .270 average. And the addition of Jason Bay makes this a much better offensive team.

Many of us were surprised that the Mets didn’t do anything to improve the pitching staff during the offseason. That includes me. I didn’t think the Mets would go crazy and sign John Lackey, but I did think they would bring in someone consistent like Jon Garland. When Randy Wolf got his ridiculous 3-year/$29.75 million deal, I knew the Mets wouldn’t be in the market for a pitcher with any kind of track record of success.

I had an email exchange with my friend, and frequent commenter, TD about this during the game on Monday. From TD:

I have no worries about them beating the ball to a pulp.  That’s a nice offense, even with Reyes and Beltran out.

Shoot, I don’t think they’ll even miss Beltran. If you set up the lineup properly, Even Matthews JR can be an above average good hitter.  He’ll see a lot of fastballs!

Mets 2010 Season Preview – Top 10 Questions

The Mets are going into 2010 with question marks at every position on the field. They’re taking a 70-win team in 2009 and only adding Jason Bay to the mix. Is that enough to make a run at the World Series?

When I was in Port St. Lucie watching the last week of Mets spring training, a lot of thoughts about the team were running through my head. There are so many questions marks on this roster. This was a 70-win team last season and Jason Bay is the only major change. It’s a big gamble the Mets are making to go into the season with so many players that couldn’t play up to their potential last year.

If you’re a Mets fan, you’ve probably already read too many season previews from every mainstream media outlet. So I won’t bore you with another one that reads the same way.

I’m usually a very optimistic fan about the Mets. How can’t you be? They put more financial resources into the team than any other ownership group in the league. But there are some major questions about this year’s version of the Mets that I’ll ask below. We won’t know the answers for at least a month, maybe more.

Are We All Pumped for Mets 2010 Opening Day?

It’s time for Mets fans to get pumped up about opening day 2010! We’re all concerned about some shortcomings on the roster, especially about who will step up as the leader of this team.

I’m still trying to figure out this team chemistry-wise. I have heard all spring from bloggers covering the Mets and WFAN that the clubhouse atmosphere is so much better than last year with the additions of Jeff Francoeur and Jason Bay. I hope so.

After watching the Yankees struggle for the first part of last year, they seemed to kick it into gear but only after a few of the new players shook things up.

Mets 2010 Roster Taking Shape- Six More Cuts

After last night’s game against the Rays (losing 4-2) the Mets made six more cuts. That takes the current roster down to 27 players. Cut from the team last night were pitchers Nelson Figueroa, Kiko Calero, Bobby Parnell, and Elmer Dessens. Also cut were infielder Russ Adams and outfielder/first baseman Chris Carter.

Both Figueroa and Carter were somewhat surprising. They both seemed to be on the very edge of making the team. Relief pitcher Raul Valdes is still on the roster but will probably be cut by tomorrow’s 3pm deadline to get down to 25 players.

Carter appears to have lost the battle for the last spot on the roster to Frank Catalanotto. Omir Santos is still on the roster but will probably be cut by tomorrow as well.

I’m sure there are some really unhappy players right now. Figueroa made no bones about his desire to make the team, speaking openly to the press about it. And I assume Carter is unhappy after having a really good spring.
