Mets Should Start Jeremy Hefner

The Mets decided to replace Chris Schwinden in the starting rotation with Miguel Batista… For now. But they should take a look at what Jeremy Hefner’s been doing at Buffalo so far this season. He’s 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in 33 IP. He threw 6 scoreless innings over 5 games for the Mets this spring too.

Hefner may be over-matched my Major League pitching but he’s mastering the Triple-A level right now and deserves a shot at Mike Pelfrey’s vacated rotation spot. Continue reading “Mets Should Start Jeremy Hefner”

Mike Pelfrey’s Mets Career Ends with Surgery

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - FEBRUARY 24: RY 24: Mik...

Mets starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey underwent Tommy John surgery today in Alabama by Dr. James Andrews. The surgery will force Pelfrey to miss the rest of the 2012 season and, in all likelihood, end his disappointing Mets career.

Pelfrey was a non-tender candidate coming into 2012. So it’s impossible to imagine him coming back to the team following a major injury. If he doesn’t come back, he’ll be remembered by Mets fans as a big disappointment after being the 9th overall draft pick in 2005. Hopes were high for Pelfrey to continue the Mets tradition of drafting and developing great starting pitchers that goes back to the 1960’s. Mets Delaying David Wright Contract Extension

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 08: David Wright #5 of t...

CBS Sports is reporting that the Mets are delaying working on a contract extension for David Wright. I wrote that the Mets should offer Wright a contract to keep him with the team for the foreseeable future. But they’re choosing to wait because of Wright’s recent down seasons and some big contract extensions signed by comparable players recently that would increase the value of any contract Wright would sign

It’s a gamble for both parties to wait on an extension for Wright. If he plays well, it’s in Wright’s best interest to get to free agency and exercise his full market potential. But the Mets are at risk of losing Wright to a contract that they can’t, or won’t, match in free agency like Jose Reyes. Continue reading “Mets Delaying David Wright Contract Extension”

Video: Mets David Wright Gives Phillies the Finger

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 08: David Wright #5 of t...

Despite playing with a broken pinkie finger, David Wright returned to action yesterday and crushed the first pitch he saw to deep center for a home run. The bomb off Vince Worley can be seen in the video below. Wright ended up going 3 for 5 with 2 runs in the game.

As I wrote earlier this week, he broke the finger diving back to first base on a pickoff attempt. And there was serious consideration about putting him on the disabled list. As a matter of fact, Josh Satin was flown in from Buffalo and was in Philly warming up before the game yesterday.

The Mets took both games of the series so far and go for the sweep this afternoon against Cole Hamels. Mike Pelfrey is on the mound for the Mets and I’m sure he’s glad to have Wright in the field behind him after that performance yesterday.

David Wright Has Broken Finger

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 03: Ike Davis #29 of the N...

The Mets announced that third baseman David Wright has a broken pinky finger and will miss a couple of games. He’s not going on the disabled list… yet. Based on the Mets recent history, it wouldn’t surprise me if that happens within the next week. The Mets seemed to have difficulty in recent years determining if players need to be on the disabled list because of the severity of their injuries.

Wright’s inability to play last night against the Nationals, combined with Ike Davis’ scheduled day off for Valley Fever evaluation, led to one of the most impotent lineup’s in recent memory. Continue reading “David Wright Has Broken Finger”

Mets Sign Contract Extension with Jon Niese

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - FEBRUARY 24: Jon Niese #...

The Mets finally locked in Jon Niese to a contract extension after days of speculation that this was coming. The contract is similarly structured to the deal that Derek Holland recently signed with the Rangers. The deal is 5-years/$25 million plus two option years that could max out the contract at $52 million.

It’s a good deal for Niese. He lost four arbitration years and gave up only one free agent year if the options aren’t exercised. Niese in 22-23 with a 4.39 ERA for his career but he is left handed. I’ve always like Niese but never thought he was worthy of a significant contract extension.

Sadly, this is the biggest contract Sandy Alderson has signed since becoming GM of the Mets more than two seasons ago. That goes to show you the sad state of financial affairs of the Mets.

Mets Johan Santana to Start Opening Day 2012

Mets manager Terry Collins announced the 2012 rotation this morning. I have to say that I’m happily surprised that Johan Santana will start opening day on Thursday at Citi Field. I know there are no expectations for this team. But having Santana out there on opening day is huge.

Santana will be followed in the rotation by R.A. Dickey, Jon Niese, Mike Pelfrey, and Dillon Gee.

I’m still not expecting much this season but Santana pitching every five days makes this team much more interesting to me. Does this news give you any hope for the 2012 season?
