Jose Reyes to Rehab with Binghamton Mets

Jose Reyes has been on the Mets’ disabled list since August 8th with a hamstring strain. He’s going to start playing in rehab games tonight for the Binghamton Mets. If you’re in the Binghamton area it’s a great chance to see Reyes playing shortstop in a small stadium setting. I would guess that he’ll be playing the double-play combination with Reese Havens at second base. If the Mets are able to re-sign Reyes in the offseason, maybe we’ll see that combo at Citi Field next season.

Here’s a promotional video that the B-Mets put together for this rehab stint. Reyes will likely play a few (maybe three) games for Binghamton before returning from the disabled list.

In this week’s second installment of the Mets Weekly Report, Kerel Cooper of OnTheBlack.com and I talk about the prospect of the Mets finishing in last place this season. In the first installment this week, we talked about which feat is more impressive: 300 saves or 600 home runs.

The second video installment is based on David Daniels’ post this week about the very real possibility that the Mets could finish in last place in the NL East. We also talk about what we think the future holds in 2012 for Justin Turner. Will he be the incumbent second baseman or will he be an afterthought from a bad 2011 team?

Check out the video below and let me know in the comments what you think about the Mets potential to finish in last place this year and if you think Turner is a lock for second base next season.

Since there aren’t many Major League highlights to watch from the Mets right now, I thought that I would switch gears to show you what the future of the Mets looks like. Here’s some video of Binghamton Mets pitcher Matt Harvey throwing 7 scoreless innings last night against the Erie SeaWolves.

So far this season, Harvey is 4-3 with a 4.35 ERA in 10 starts at Binghamton. He was the Mets first round draft choice in the 2010 draft.

Check out the video below and comment if you’d like to see Harvey in the Mets big league rotation in 2012.

In this week’s Mets Weekly Report Kerel Cooper of OnTheBlack.com poses an interesting question about baseball legacies. Is it more impressive that Jason Isringhausen got his 300th save this week or that Jim Thome hit his 600th home run?

It’s interesting because both players have accomplished these feats due to longevity in the game more so than consistently outstanding play, especially in recent years. Thome is one of the oldest players to get to 600 and Izzy went three years without getting a save before this season.

Check out the video below and let me know in the comment which feat you think is more impressive.

Jose Reyes may Not Return from Injury on Tuesday

PHOENIX, AZ - JULY 12: National League All-St...

Impending free agent Jose Reyes has been on the disabled list since August 8th. It’s his second trip to the disabled list this season with a hamstring injury. He’s still leading the National League in hitting with a .336 average and second in the league in stolen bases to Michael Bourn with 34.

It’s been an incredible season for Reyes except for the injuries. I’m sure every player dreams of having the season of a lifetime in their contract year. And Reyes has been doing that. The only potential problem for his free agency are the injuries. He’s had a fairly lengthy list of injuries during the beginning of his career with the Mets and that may keep him from the big money as Fred Wilpon told the New Yorker earlier this season.

I didn’t think that this latest hamstring injury would be a problem for Reyes unless he wasn’t ready to come off the disabled list after 15 days when he’s eligible. That day is Tuesday and it’s starting to look like Reyes might not be back with the team in Philadelphia.

Reyes told reporters yesterday when asked about playing on Tuesday:

I don’t know about that. I need to run the bases first before I decide when I’m going to play. I’ve been running the past three days, and I feel very good. I’m not running 100 percent yet, but it’s getting there.

That’s a problem. Reyes needs to show other teams that may offer him a contract in the offseason that his injury is very minor. He needs to do that by being in the starting lineup on Tuesday. If not, I think every day that he doesn’t play is going to cost him in free agency. Staying on the DL this late in the season, with his injury history, has to lead other teams to question his health in a long-term contract.

Mets Have a Real Shot at Last Place

The Mets Could Win the Anti-Pennant Race…

After reading Yahoo Sports this afternoon, I wasn’t surprised to come across an article reporting that the Mets had a real shot at finishing up in last place. To me it seems for the last 4 years they have always had a shot at finishing up in last place. Coming into Spring Training I thought this looked like a last place team and now they may actually be that team.

Will they rise to the occasion this year and stay out of last, giving us hope for the future? Or will they wither from the dog days of summer and end up in last, right where I predicted they would be…?

Only time will tell but the Mets, Nationals, and Marlins are all within 2 games of each other.  So, for the next 6 weeks there’s sort of an anti-pennant race we can all watch. The race to the cellar!

The Mets schedule for the rest of August is brutal. Milwaukee, Phillies, and then Atlanta. Then they’ll finish off with a strange series against the Marlins.

5 Game Series with Florida

The Mets have an interesting 5 game series with Florida coming up the end of this month. They then go on to play the Nationals and Marlins on the road.

They still have series against Atlanta, the Phillies, St. Louis and Cincinnati in September too. These will all be tough series to take. They have 12 games away and 14 games at home. This year home field advantage has not been an advantage at all.

It’s very possible they continue to play sub .500 ball while all the teams in a Pennant race beat them up. Continue reading “Mets Have a Real Shot at Last Place”

Video: Mets Weekly Report – Mike Pelfrey and Jason Bay

In this week’s Mets Weekly Report I talk to Kerel Cooper of On The Black about several topics that have hit the news this week both on and off the field. First, Mike Pelfrey made some revealing comments to the New York Post that he thought it was unrealistic for anyone to think that the Mets had a chance at the playoffs in 2011. It’s not so much the content of his comments that’s the concern but the person making the comments. The Mets #1 starter this year talking about going into the season thinking they had no chance is a tough pill to swallow.

Next, we talk about Jason Bay’s recent hot streak. He’s a streaky hitter to start with but there’s still hope that he can get his act together and be the player the Mets thought they were signing two years ago. Bay still has two years left on his deal with the Mets so anytime he goes on even the slightest hot streak we all tend to think that maybe this is the time that he finally get back on track.

Check out the video below and let me know your thoughts on Pelfrey and Bay in the comments.
