Preview: Rockies at Mets August 11, 2010

Colorado Rockies (58-54) at New York Mets (56-56) 7:10 pm

Jeff Francis (4-4 4.67) vs Jon Niese (7-5 3.63)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets have a chance to make things happen against Francis. He isn’t having a good season after missing all of last year to injury. For the most part, Niese has been so impressive this year. He only has 28 starts in his career but he looks like an experienced veteran out there. Also, expect Jeff Francoeur back in the lineup against the lefty Francis.

Mets 1 – Rockies 0 August 10, 2010

Apr. 27, 2010 - Flushing, NY, USA - April 25, 2010: New York Mets starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey strides toward the plate during a rain-filled Major League Baseball game vs. visiting Atlanta Braves at Citi Field in Flushing, NY. He allowed no runs while scattering 5 hits and 5 walks over 5 innings. He got the win to improve his season record to 4-0 in the Mets 1-0 victory in a game that was called one strike into the top 6th inning on account of rain.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets finally got a good game from Mike Pelfrey for the first time in a month and a half. He went 7 shutout innings and threw 122 pitches only allowing 4 hits. He didn’t go overboard with the splitter tonight. It seems like the league has caught up with that. It was a great game that Pelfrey needed badly.

There wasn’t much offense for the Mets but they were up against Ubaldo Jimenez. They only had 4 hits but did have 5 walks. The only run of the game was on a Jose Reyes sacrifice fly in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out.

The Mets looked good for the first time in quite a while. It’s a nice way to start this series.

Colorado Rockies (58-53) at New York Mets (55-56) 7:10 pm

Ubaldo Jimenez (17-2 2.61) vs Mike Pelfrey (10-6 4.16)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Rockies come to town after going 3-3 in their last two series against the Giants and Pirates. Jimenez is in the running for the Cy Young Award this year, so it won’t be an easy task to beat him. But he has been hit a few times. His last two games he’s only given up 2 runs in 14 innings though. We all know about Pelfrey’s stuggles. He hasn’t won a game since June 25. I keep waiting for him to regain his early season form but it isn’t happening.

Mets Youth Movement Misplayed

Ruben Tejada
Image via Wikipedia

It’s not that I mind the Mets going young by bringing up Fernando Martinez and Ruben Tejada. I’m cautiously optimistic that both players have some kind of future in the Major Leagues, whether it’s with the Mets or another team. Since the 2010 season has tanked, there’s no reason for the Mets not to go young for a couple of months to see what they have. Maybe they can even showcase some young players to prepare for offseason trades.

It also makes a lot of sense to bench Luis Castillo for Tejada. The Mets already know exactly what they have in Castillo, and it isn’t good. The guy has always been a slap hitter with limited range in the field since he came to the Mets. Hitting .245 this season in 61 games doesn’t exactly make him irreplaceable.

Although Tejada is only hitting .196 and is pretty much an automatic out, he’s only 20 years old and has some serious skills in the field. If he can gain some experience this year, in a meaningless season, it could pay dividends in the future. Continue reading “Mets Youth Movement Misplayed”

Phillies 6 – Mets 5 August 8, 2010

July 25, 2010 - Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES - epa02261051 New York Mets' R.A. Dickey pitches during first inning of a Major League baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles, California, USA, 25 July 2010.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe glory days for R.A. Dickey came crashing down today as he only lasted 3 innings and gave up 6 runs (4 earned). The Phillies put up 5 runs in the third, mostly on a 3-run shot by Raul Ibanez. Dickey just didn’t seem to have it from the get-go the Phillies were really patient today taking a lot of his pitches.

The Mets had some offense going with 10 hits and 1 walk in the game. They got to Roy Halladay, which doesn’t happen very often. But it was just too little to recover from the damage done to Dickey earlier in the game. The Mets put up 2 runs in the first and looked like they were going to run rough-shot over the Phils today. Josh Thole went 3 for 4 and Angel Pagan was all over the place going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 SB’s. Chris Carter had a great pinch hit RBI double to the wall in center field that just missed going out and tying the game.

The Mets drop another series and head home to play the Rockies on Tuesday.

New York Mets (55-55) at Philadelphia Phillies (61-49) 1:35 pm

R.A. Dickey (7-4 2.36) vs Roy Halladay (13-8 2.17)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Phillies play the rubber game of the series today in what should be a good pitching match up. Dickey has been excellent and consistent since his first start on May 19. I keep waiting for him to lost it, but it hasn’t happened. Expect Fernando Martinez to get the start in right field today. It won’t be easy for the Mets against Halladay. He’s had three straight great starts and wins only giving up 2 runs in his last 24 innings over that period.

Video: Mets’ Fernando Martinez on Call Up

Here’s some video from ESPN with Fernando Martinez being called up to the Mets to replace Jesus Feliciano on the Major League roster. He talks about  getting scratched from the Triple-A Buffalo lineup on Friday but not being told what was happening. He didn’t know if he was being traded or called up to the Mets.
