What to do with Angel Pagan?

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsMets fans have seen the best of Angel Pagan this season. After 65 games this season Pagan has been the most clutch and consistent Mets player this season.

This begs the question, what do the Mets do with him when Carlos Beltran comes off the disabled list?

Beltran has yet to start his rehab assignment on June 16th, but the Mets are hoping to have Beltran back by mid- July and when he does come back manager Jerry Manuel has a tough decision to make.

Right now the Mets have a good problem. Does Manuel move Pagan to right field and bench Jeff Francoeur? Does he bench Angel Pagan and get some late game spark off the bench? Does he use Francoeur and Pagan in a platoon? Continue reading “What to do with Angel Pagan?”

Mets 8 – Indians 4 June 16, 2010

June 16, 2010 - Cleveland, OHIO, UNITED STATES - epa02206016 Jon Niese of the New York Mets delivers a pitch against the Cleveland Indians in the first inning of their game at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, 16 June 2010.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets won their sixth straight game… And they’re doing it on the road! Jonathon Niese got it done again for his third straight win. This didn’t compare to his last start which was a complete game 1-hitter. But it was a nice start going 7 innings and giving up 3 runs. That’s solid.

The Mets offense was clicking again with 14 hits but no walks. Angel Pagan had a big game going 3 for 5 with 1 run, 3 RBI’s, and 1 stolen base. The Mets put up 5 runs in the third inning and never looked back.

Jason Bay left the game with a quad contusion and is day to day. He ran into Andy Marte while legging out a chopper in the infield. It didn’t look too serious but Jesus Feliciano took over in left field.

The Mets go for the second straight series sweep tomorrow night.

Mets’ Angel Pagan: A Refined Talent

Angel Pagan

Entering the 2010 campaign, the ceiling of Angel Pagan was seemingly an enigma. A talented outfielder plagued by injuries and bone-headed on the field mishaps, all we could really be confident about was that Pagan was a better alternative in center field than the great Gary Matthews Jr. Up to this point though, hitting in a line-up that lacks a true identity, Pagan has been an offensive propeller for the Mets.

So far this season, Pagan has proved all of his critics wrong. Boasting a solid .283 BA, he’s hit in all different slots of the Mets lineup and is well on his way to scoring 100 runs on the season. Pagan has also proved that he’s more of a threat on the bases this year with 12 swipes in 15 chances. He was gunned down a third of the time last season by opposing catchers. Mets 2 – Padres 1 June 8, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets came out on top of this one in 11 innings on a solo shot way out into the Pepsi porch by Ike Davis. That was a jump out of your seat moment but Mike Pelfrey was outstanding again through 9 innings. He only gave up 5 hits, 1 run, and no walks, with 6 strikeouts. It’s a shame that it went to extras and he didn’t get the win or complete game.

Other than Davis’ big blast to win it, the Mets as a team had 9 hits and 1 walk. David Wright was 2 for 4 with a double and is up to a respectable .283 avg. now. Angel Pagan was 2 for 5 with a triple and a stolen base. He continues to make plays every single day. And Jose Reyes was 2 for 4 with a big home run to left field to tie it in the seventh. The home run barely made it out and was reviewed. It was initially called a in play but after review it was ruled a home run.

These kind of games are my favorites to watch. I love the pitching duels. Great way to start the home series against the Pads.

Mets 7 – Marlins 6 June 6, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets finished off the sweep of the Marlins to pay them back for last month’s sweep in Miami. The good thing to see was the Mets coming back from down 5-0 in the sixth inning after another awful start from Hisanori Takahashi. He’s looking more and more like a long man coming out of the bullpen to start the more we see of him. He gave up two big bombs to Dan Uggla and Cody Ross and that was it for him.

The Mets comeback was brought on by something unusual for this team, late inning offense. They put up 12 hits and 6 walks but didn’t score a run before the sixth inning. David Wright was 3 for 5, Angel Pagan was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 1 SB, and the hot Jeff Francoeur 2 for 4 with a huge 3-run homer to tie it in the seventh.

It’s good to finally see a comeback win. We haven’t seen a lot of those over the last couple of seasons.

Mets 2010 Team MVP- First 50 Games

New York Mets Angel Pagan hits a home run in the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe New York Metropolitans 2010 season is now 50 games old and they have a 25-25 record alongside their name in the standings.

Some Met fans have been disappointed. A .500 record in 50 games just isn’t going to beat the Philadelphia Phillies.

Some Met fans are optimistic. The team has had their struggles and they have some chinks in their armor. Oliver Perez, Mike Jacobs, Gary Matthews Jr, and Jeff Francouer haven’t really turned out like they were supposed to. Injuries to John Maine, Jon Niese, Ryota Igarashi and Carlos Beltran have hurt the Mets this season.

So when looking for a team MVP this season it was really tough to find on. Offensively, the Mets have been struggling. David Wright and Jose Reyes struggled for the first 50 games, although it appears Reyes is climbing out of a slump. Jeff Francouer has struggled as well. Luis Castillo has been banged up and Ike Davis has only played in 36 of those 50 games. Jason Bay got off to a rough start and made a bid for MVP but fell short. Johan Santana has been outstanding, along with Mike Pelfrey but they only play once a week. The bullpen has been good, but again they don’t pitch every day. So I came to a surprising conclusion. Brewers 8 – Mets 6 May 29, 2010

Mets Nieve reacts after giving up a two out solo home run to Brewers Kottaras in a MLB National League game in Milwaukee

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThis game was a disaster right from the first inning for the Mets. They started the inning looking good with a run scoring double by Jason Bay only to give it up an more at the hands of Fernando Nieve. Nieve was dreadful in his first start of the season giving up a grand slam to Cory Hart in the first and another run in the second before he hit the showers.

Oliver Perez made an appearance to give up 3 more runs over 2 IP. That raises his season WHIP to 1.97 which seems almost impossibly bad. Hart touched Perez up for his second homer of the game and third in two days as well.

The Mets did have some offense in the game putting up 6 runs on 9 hits and 4 walks. But they struck out 12 times in the game. Angel Pagan was the biggest culprit with 3. Ike Davis was 1 for 5 with a 3-run homer (5th of the season).

The Mets have lost the series in Milwaukee and need to salvage tomorrow’s game to avoid the sweep.
