New York Mets starting pitcher Pelfrey throws a pitch to the Philadelphia Phillies in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets finished off the sweep of the Phillies in style with their third consecutive shutout. It’s hard to believe that the Phillies couldn’t even muster up one run in the entire series. The Mets got good pitching again from Mike Pelfrey going 7 strong innings giving up only 3 hits but he did walk 5. He got away with the walks because the defense put up three double plays behind him.

The Mets got 9 hits as a team and 3 of those were from Jose Reyes who is on fire right now. Angel Pagan also had 2 hits and a stolen base (8 on the season). Pagan is hitting .296 and playing so well this season in all phases of the game. His game is really peaking.

The Mets take their five straight wins to Milwaukee for a weekend series to see Willie Randolph and Rick Peterson again.

Mets 5 – Phillies 0 May 26, 2010

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets shut out the Phillies again tonight behind the second strong start of Hisanori Takahashi. He went 6 IP giving up only 5 hits and no walks. Granted, the Phillies aren’t doing anything on offense right now. But it’s still a good start for Takahashi. His season ERA is down to 2.13 after tonight.

The Mets made the most of their runners on offense. They only had 7 hits and 4 walks but managed to put up 5 runs. Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan had 2 hits apiece, including Reyes’ first homer of the season. And Pagan and Luis Castillo had 2 stolen bases each. Rod Barajas came through again with 3 RBI’s on a 1 for 3 night with a big double and a sac fly.

You could say the best thing about these two games is shutting out the Phillies, but I think the hot offense of Reyes is the biggest sign of good things to come.

Mets hitter Pagan celebrates his home run against the Nationals during the fourth inning of their MLB National League game in Washington

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets got a quality start from knuckleballer R.A. Dickey who went 6 IP and gave up 2 ER’s. He did pretty well for himself throwing 96 pitches and looked like he could have gone further in the game. The bullpen couldn’t hold on with Raul Valdes and the tired Fernando Nieve giving up 3 runs between them.

The offense was pretty weak again with the Mets only getting 5 hits as a team. One was an inside the park home run by Angel Pagan.

Pagan seems to be one of the only guys going out to make plays on a daily basis. He also started a triple play in the fifth. It was partially due to some poor work by the umpires. They were slow to make a call on whether Pagan caught a shoestring catch and that left the base runners hanging.

The Mets look pretty lifeless and feels more and more like watching the 2009 Mets.

New York Mets' Jason Bay sits in the dugout following their loss in their MLB National League baseball game against the Florida Marlins in Miami

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets lost their fourth straight game and six of seven. John Maine regressed tonight with a terrible start. He walked the first three batters of the game without throwing a strike. He was lucky to get out of the first inning only giving up 3 runs on 40 pitches. You knew it was going to be a long night right from the start. He finished up going 5 IP and gave up 6 ER raising his ERA to 6.13.

The offense was switched up with Jose Reyes going back to leadoff and Angel Pagan hitting third. It paid some early dividends with the team having 13 hits and scoring 5 runs. Reyes was 2 for 5 hitting leadoff.

The offense wasn’t enough to make up for Maine’s awful start. It’s really become a sorry looking team over the last week.

Mets Lineup Change Needed

MLB: Cubs vs Mets APR 22

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsDuring the pregame show tonight, current Met commentator Keith Hernandez analyzed the most potent lineup that a team can send out on the field 162 games a year.

Long story short, he said the first two batters should be high OBP guys, the third should be a solid line drive hitter, the fourth should be your “big bopper”, and 5-7 should be your RBI guys. Continue reading “Mets Lineup Change Needed”

New York Mets pitcher Perez reacts after giving up a three-run home run to Florida Marlins batter Uggla during the third inning of their MLB National League baseball game in Miami

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThere’s nothing left to say about Oliver Perez. He’s got nothing. Absolutely nothing. It’s actually become sad to see him getting bombed. That’s how bad it is. He gave up 7 ER’s tonight in 3.1 IP. Of those runs, 4 were home runs including 3 in the fourth inning and Dan Uggla had 2 in the game. It was beyond ugly.

The Mets had only 4 hits as a team for the second night in a row. Only Angel Pagan did anything offensively. He had a 2 run double in the fifth and that was the offense for the game.

The Mets are just getting blown out of the park right now. Tonight is their third straight loss and five of the last six. Ugh.
