Maine, Mets Clobber Dodgers 12-1

The story of the day was John Maine returning to his spring training form. He went 8.1 innings and carried a shutout into the ninth. That was the longest start by a Mets pitcher this season and a nice break for the bullpen with an off-day tomorrow.

Ryan church again was in the middle of the offense with another home run. Even Maine came through with a hit and two RBI’s. There was tons of offense by the Mets as you would guess by the final score. I don’t think it was coincidence that Carlos Delgado was out of the lineup and Marlon Anderson played first base. The lineup has a better flow when Delgado’s not in the middle.

The Mets come back to Shea on Friday night against the Reds after having a 3-3 road trip. If they can play .500 on the road that’s just fine, especially on the West coast.

Reader Poll Results- Carlos Delgado Verdict

The latest reader poll results are final. The question was: Will Carlos Delgado be on the Mets roster for the entire 2008 season?

The results are very mixed:

Yes- 56%

No- 44%

Clearly, we’re divided as Mets fans on this issue. I’m sure that the “yes” answers have taken into consideration Delgado’s recent improved hitting and contract that far outweighs his abilities. Thus, the difficulty trading or releasing him must be considered.

The “no” answers have to consider that Delgado has been hurting the Mets both offensively and defensively this season. Very little is expected of Delgado defensively, but his weakness in the field becomes more glaring if he’s not hitting… and hitting with power.

We’ll keep an eye on the Delgado situation as the season continues. Maybe we’ll have to re-run this poll when we get closer to the non-waiver and waiver trading deadline. My guess is that Delgado will be the first player put through waivers in August.

Reader Poll: Carlos Delgado Final Day

Today is the last day of the current reader poll. Will Carlos Delgado be on the Mets roster for the entire 2008 season? So far the “yes” voters have it by a wide margin. Make sure that you get your vote in on the right side of the page before the end of the day. If you’re viewing this in a feed reader, please visit the site to submit your vote.

Reyes, Mets Rock First Place D-Backs 7-2

Sorry for the late post but I was too tired to start writing last night. These West coast night games are tough.

John Maine, once again, didn’t have a great game although his velocity was up from his previous starts. You never know if it’s the radar gun in the particular stadium though. The radar gun at Chase Park had Maine throwing his fastball as high as 95-96, which is unusually high for him. But he has had some “dead arm” periods over the last couple of years.

Jose Reyes put on a show offensively going 4 for 5 with 3 runs and a stolen base. He also had an incredible diving stop and throw at shortstop. He was on fire last night. Two of his hits were triples and one was a double. In one triple he was thrown out at home going for an inside the park homer. Reyes is the most exciting player in baseball right now… period!

David Wright looked good at the plate. He was right on the ball last night. He went 3 for 5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s, including one double. Even Carlos Delgado got in on the act going 2 for 4 with two singles.

It was great to see Moises Alou back in left field. He’s still turning on inside pitches and ripping line drives into the outfield. He adds a huge force in the middle of the lineup.

At War With Delgado

This afternoon I got to listen to a little of WFAN’s Mike and the Mad Dog show discussing whether we, the Mets fans, are at war with Carlos Delgado. To summarize the situation:

  • Delgado’s been terrible since April 2007
  • Mets fans boo him at Shea Stadium

It’s as simple as that.

Personally, I haven’t engaged in booing him. Although I could certainly understand it. I don’t blame fellow Mets fans for booing him one bit.

On the other hand, I’m sure that Delgado is sick of hearing it and doesn’t like it. He snubbed the fans by not coming out for a curtain call after his two home run game yesterday afternoon. I can understand that. He doesn’t like us, and we don’t like him.

I wouldn’t describe our relationship with Delgado as a “war”. But I would say it’s a very sour relationship. I would venture to say that he probably can’t wait to leave the Mets. Equally so, we can’t wait for him to be gone either. I’ll be perfectly happy when he continues his career in Pittsburgh or Texas next season. The fans there most likely have much lower expectations of their players.

Adam Rubin of the Daily News posted Delgado’s statements to the media this afternoon. Frankly, I don’t believe anything Delgado says. His media saavy is really showing in his comments. He’s not going to come out and say he’s angry about the way he’s been been treated by the fans. But I’m sure that it’s in his head.

The sooner we end this relationship the better.

Delgado Hits Two As Mets Beat Braves 6-3

John Smoltz didn’t have it right from the start today. It was good to see the Mets finally get to jump all over a pitcher. He gave up four runs over four innings to take the loss. The Mets win 2 out of 3 in the series which is critical. They have to win these home series within the division if they expect to be playing in October.

Nelson Figueroa was okay again today going 5.1 innings and giving up three runs to get the win. He hasn’t showed me that he’s markedly better than Mike Pelfrey if a decision comes down to which one stays in the rotation when Pedro Martinez gets back.

The Mets again used five pitchers in the win. It’s worrying me that we’re not getting more depth from the starters. The guys from the bullpen are in there every day. Although today wasn’t the day for it, Willie needs to start thinking about stretching out the starters to give the guys in the bullpen a break. Billy Wagner locked the game down again in the ninth. He actually gave up a hit for the first time this year. But he’s looked better this season than at any time since he’s been with the Mets. He looks like a man on a mission and I like to see that. I wish everyone on the team played with the same intensity that he does.

Raul Casanova was 3 for 4 with a home run. He’s done a terrific job backing up Brian Schneider, and playing frequently since Schneider has been hurt. Luis Castillo was 3 for 5 and is inching his average back up. He’s hitting .284 now and doesn’t look “lost” at the plate like he did last week.

The story of the day has to be Carlos Delgado. He was 2 for 2 with two home runs and three runs scored. The fans called on him for a curtain call but he sat down in the dugout spurning the crowd. I don’t blame him at all. I’d probably do the same thing. Rightfully, he’s been scorched in the press and booed at Shea. I’ve let him have it myself.

The question is still valid about who Delgado is at this point in his career. He can’t be in a slump because it’s lasted for more than a season. Can he be a one trick pony hitting occasional home runs in bunches with a .200 average? I don’t know what to make of him. I’m sure the Mets management doesn’t either.
