Are We All Pumped for Mets 2010 Opening Day?

It’s time for Mets fans to get pumped up about opening day 2010! We’re all concerned about some shortcomings on the roster, especially about who will step up as the leader of this team.

I’m still trying to figure out this team chemistry-wise. I have heard all spring from bloggers covering the Mets and WFAN that the clubhouse atmosphere is so much better than last year with the additions of Jeff Francoeur and Jason Bay. I hope so.

After watching the Yankees struggle for the first part of last year, they seemed to kick it into gear but only after a few of the new players shook things up.

Mets Links: Spring Training, David Wright, Mike Jacobs

I haven’t done a “Mets Links” post in a while so I decided to bring that back this weekend. There’s plenty going on in Port St. Lucie this week with only two weeks left before the regular season starts. I’ve got some good links for you so read up below.

  • Remembering Shea – Live posts from PSL including images on #1 celebrity Mets fan Jerry Seinfeld
  • Daily News – Somehow Mike Lupica got on a kick of writing about the Mets this week. His first column is about how the Mets should stick with Jerry Manuel for the long haul. I have no idea where he came up with this one.
  • Mets Today – Mike Jacobs is starting to work out at catcher again. It’s a great move for him to try to stick as the 25th man on the roster as the emergency catcher.
  • Daily News – Lupica’s second Mets column of the week is a fluff piece on David Wright. Just what we needed. Another column about how Wright is the face of the franchise.
  • Crave – A Japanese university created a batting tee that rests the ball on bed of air instead of the tee. Check out the picture, it looks pretty good.

This video is the third part of a 2010 preview series I did with Kerel Cooper of On The Black and Joe Janish of Mets Today. You can see our 2010 Mets offseason grades and our preview of Mets catchers, Daniel Murphy and Luis Castillo. In this video we cover David Wright and Jose Reyes. Both had horrible seasons in 2009 but for different reasons. Reyes only played in 36 games due to injuries and Wright just had a rotten season offensively.

Spring training games start up Tuesday against the Braves in Port St. Lucie. That’s always a great sign that the season will get started soon, and the miserable winter weather will be long gone almost as soon. Although there are plenty of stories about the Mets coming out of Mets training camp, here are a few that really stand out this week:

  • NY Post – Jose Reyes was interviewed by federal agents regarding his relationship with Canadian doctor Anthony Galea. The doctor was charged with possession of performance enhancing drugs and his client list includes Tiger Woods and swimmer Dana Torres.
  • Star- Ledger – Kelvim Escobar still can’t pitch because of a sore shoulder that’s kept him from pitching for the last two seasons. Jerry Manuel says that Escobar probably won’t be ready for opening day either. Joel Sherman continues his assault on the Mets by writing that Escobar’s woes sums up the Mets whole operation.
  • NY Post – The Post reports that the covering for the “C” in the Citi Field sign fell during bad weather onto empty seats in the outfield smashing into pieces. If you’re in the outfield seats during a windy game, watch you back. The Post goes on to list the litany of structural problems that have plagued Citi Field in it’s first year of existence.
  • Daily News – Adam Rubin has a good, long interview with David Wright. There are many of the same story lines that you’ve already heard: his new-look physique, lack of power and high strikeout total last year, and his joking with Chipper Jones about how big the Citi Field outfield is.

I’ve been disappointed that the Mets didn’t do more to shore up the pitching rotation this offseason. I’m also surprised that they didn’t attempt an upgrade, even incremental, at first base. The more that I thought about it, after John Lackey, Matt Holliday, and Jason Bay signed their free agent deals there wasn’t anybody left on the market that I’d consider a “difference maker”. Sure, there were, and still are, some players that would be solid peripheral players for the Mets. But the 2010 season doesn’t hinge on any free agent that’s been available since Holliday signed with the Cardinals.

The 2010 season does depend on Johan Santana, Francisco Rodriguez, David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, and Bay. They’re the ones that are going to carry this team. I know it’s a long season and everyone needs to make a contribution at some point. But there’s a big difference between making an impact and making a contribution.

Mets 2010- Five Positive Story Lines

After writing this site for a few years now and reading a lot of mainstream media and blogs about the Mets, I find that it’s easy to focus on the negative aspects of the team. It’s especially easy coming off a disastrous 2009 season opening Citi Field with a “thud”. As a matter of fact, the whole organization was dismal. So much so, that Jeff Wilpon had to tour the minor league cities apologizing for the ugly teams they fielded.

With that being said, I’d like to focus on some positive stories going into 2010. It’s not all bad when you have the highest payroll in the league. You always have a chance even if the people running the organization are subpar, as is the case with the Mets. Money can overcome a lot of obstacles. I feel really bad for the Pirates and Royals fans that know they have no shot before the season even starts. Although things don’t look great for the Mets yet, we do have a shot.

David Wright Radio Interview in the Studio

Several of the Mets were in town today for an event at Citi Field. David Wright made his way into the studio with Mike Francesa on WFAN. As you would expect, a lot of the interview is about the dismal 2009 season that the team had as a whole. But he also goes into great detail about his own strange offensive season without the power that he’s had in previous seasons.

The dimensions of Citi Field and the impact on Wright are an issue as well. Personally, I like watching the Mets in a heavily-slanted pitchers park. The new Yankee Stadium and Citizens Bank are a joke and I’d hate to have to watch the Mets in a stadium like that. So I don’t have a problem with some reduced offense.

They get into the topic of steroids. I like Wright’s take on it. He didn’t give the typical protective fellow player answer that I expected. His opinion on the matter sounded just like every other fan that I’ve talked to.
