The Amazing Mets! What Fundy’s! Baseball at it’s Finest

Hey Mets Fans! This is baseball at it’s finest! A 5-13 start! Worst record in baseball! But hey, the Mets do have a manager who spent all spring pushing fundamentals and all that hard work is paying off.

But let’s go back on the field and watch Carlos Beltran hit one homer after another in his quest for riches from his next team. He’s not selfish! Wink, wink… Watch as David Wright flips his helmet in amazingly accurate fashion towards the ground as he watches another homer die at the warning track or racks up another strikeout. All this while he’s thinking, “F@%$, I could be hitting 50 F’in homers in Philly!” Watch as Ike Davis attempts to show up a few more umpires after arguing balls and strikes. Watch the uncoachable Jose Reyes play the game the same way he’s played it for the last 5 years, never improving but never getting any worse either. Watch the 2nd baseman of the day screw up another double play. Check out the left-fielder of the day from double or triple AAA as they drop a ball in left field. Watch as the Mets pinch hitters bunt into double plays. Watch as Dish Network drops SNY and nobody cares.

Watch Terry Collins do more running than any current Mets player as he makes run after run to the pitching mound. No wonder Sandy Alderson needed a manager with so much energy! Check out the new Mets who, when they smell a win once a week, play it like the 7th game of a World Series. It’s April and it’s “ALL HANDS ON DECK!” Continue reading “The Amazing Mets! What Fundy’s! Rockies 7 – Mets 6 April 11, 2011

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 08: Bobby Parnell #39 of...

The Mets lost their third consecutive game to the Rockies tonight. Mike Pelfrey pitched poorly but not as poorly as his two prior starts. Pelf reduced his ERA to 10.80 by throwing 5.1 IP and allowing 4 runs (3 earned). He gave up 6 hits and 4 walks in the game. Way too many baserunners to be successful.

Despite Pelf’s start, the Mets had a tie game going into the 8th inning. They were stringing together hits to score. They had 10 hits and 1 walk as a team with 2 RBI’s apiece by David Wright and Willie Harris.

Bobby Parnell blew up in the 8th inning throwing a wild pitch, making an error on a throw to home, and allowing a 2-run homer to Troy Tulowitzki. It was a complete disaster of an inning and Parnell was boo’d off the mound after the inning. His ERA is an awful 8.31 now and he just can’t get it done in the 8th (or any other) inning right now.

Mets 7 – Phillies 1 April 5, 2011

The Mets got to Cole Hamels early and often in this one. They got him for 6 runs in 2.2 IP on 7 hits and 2 walks. It looked like it was pretty deflating for the Philly crowd that was amped up to start the game. The Mets offense was on fire with 13 hits and 4 walks in the game.

David Wright was 4 for 5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s. He had a huge game. And Chris Young not only pitched well but he was 3 for 3 with the bat! The Mets set the scene early with a double steal by Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan in the first inning that put the Phillies on notice that the Mets were in town intending to do some damage. It was great to see.

Young looked pretty solid in his first start. The good news is that he only gave up 1 run in 5.1 IP on 5 hits and 4 walks. He also had 7 strikeouts including getting Ryan Howard twice. It was definitely a solid effort. The bad news is that Young looked like he was starting to lose it in the fifth inning and had nothing in the sixth inning. It’s still early in the season but I didn’t expect him to have such a noticeable decline in the fifth inning.

The Mets will do it again tomorrow with Mike Pelfrey and Joe Blanton on the mound.

Mets 6 – Marlins 4 April 2, 2011

This was a good game with several turns of fortune for both teams. It’s good for the Mets to get the first win under their belts so they don’t have to worry about getting swept in their first series tomorrow afternoon. Jon Niese had a very shaky start, giving up 2 runs in the first inning. But he recovered nicely to pitch the next 6 scoreless innings.

The Mets had some offense going tonight too for a change. David Wright had 3 hits including a solo homer to right field in the fourth inning. Ike Davis had 2 hits, both doubles and an RBI in the sixth inning.

It looked like Josh Thole might be the goat of the game when he singled in the seventh inning to right field and took a big turn at first base. Emilio Bonifacio threw behind him and Thole stumbled going back to first, getting thrown out. It was an ugly, embarrassing play but Thole redeemed himself in the ninth with the go-ahead RBI single.

K-Rod was terrible in the ninth, giving up 3 hits and a run to blow the save. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It was a terrible start to 2011 for him.

The Mets bombed the Marlins bullpen in the tenth inning though. They had 4 hits and scored 3 runs led by a big RBI double down the right field line by Willie Harris.

New York Mets Third Baseman David Wright

Jim Bowden previews the 2011 Mets for Fox Sports in the video below. I think he pretty much nailed it. 2011 probably isn’t going to be a great year for the Mets. The finances appear to be a problem and it led to little offseason activity. The Mets have a few valuable pieces, notably David Wright and Jose Reyes, that can deliver production for the team or return value in a trade.

The prediction is for the Mets to finish fourth in the NL East and I think that’s a pretty fair assessment. You could make an argument for a third place finish, but I think it would be difficult to predict that the Mets will finish with a better record than the Phillies or Braves.

As Bowden mentioned, with about $60 million coming off the books in 2012, next year’s team will look a lot different than what we’re watching this season. http://img.widgets.video.s-msn.com/flash/customplayer/1_0/customplayer.swf

Mets have Bigger Problems than Cliff Lee

May 28, 2010- Milwaukee, WI. Miller Park..New York Mets starting pitcher Johan Santana pitched for 8 scoreless inning giving up 3 hits and striking out 5 Brewers batters..Milwaukee Brewers won over the New York Mets 2-0, taking the first game of the 3 game series against the Mets...Mike McGinnis / CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets front office has their work cut out for them. With the announcement of the Phillies signing of Cliff Lee, Mets fans everywhere cringed at the possibility of another World Series Championship to a division rival. Now the best team in the division just got a whole lot better. The Phillies will start the year with a rotation of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels. This is the best rotation in MLB right now.

This is painful for Mets fans. The front office has simply conceded that this year and maybe next, will be a wash. They are wasting the prime of David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Johan Santana. They are also wasting the end of the career of Jason Bay. They are tricking themselves into believing that Daniel Murphy will be a good fielder and that they will be able to spend money in the next two years for free agents.

With the Mets on the decline, I really hope that someone is taking a close look at their financial future. They have money tied up in players next year for over $120 million dollars. In 2012, they already have over $60 million dollars allocated to players but this does not include the impending signings of Ike Davis, Angel Pagan, R.A. Dicky, Jose Reyes, Mike Pelfrey, Jon Niese, Bobby Parnell, or Josh Thole. While I do not think they will sign all of those players in 2012, the signings of even half of those players might push the 2012 dollars over $100 million and it still would not include any big free agent signings. Mets Should Make An Offer For Derek Jeter

NEW YORK - APRIL 03: David Wright of the New York Mets and Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees attend Delta's Jeter/Wright batting challenge at the Stone Rose Lounge on April 3, 2009 in New York City. (Photo by Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images)

There! I said it. Something no one else would dare say. “Go get Derek Jeter”.

The Mets have a leadership problem and a hole at second base. Both holes can be filled immediately and at the same time some bragging rights can be taken for the City of NY.

WE JUST STOLE YOUR CAPTAIN! Take that Yankee fans! Welcome to NY Sandy Alderson. You’re the Man!

Yes, my crazy, zany, wacky, ridiculous idea for the Mets to sign Jeter is not exactly “Saberliscous” but who cares. Think about what would happen if the Mets stole the future Hall of Famer from the Yankees. Think of the ticket sales! Think of all the crying Yankee fans. Think of all the Met #2 Jerseys that would be floating around the Tri-state area with Jeter’s name on it. Oh the pain!

Jeter can obviously handle the NY media, give hands on training to David Wright on how to be a captain and bring some professionalism to that clubhouse.

Of course, the Yankees would never allow themselves to lose a bidding war for Jeter to the Mets. At the very least drive up Jeter’s offer. Force the Yankee’s to overpay him considerably, thereby ensuring the Yankees will have less payroll flexibility in the future. Knock out the Yankees this year from next years free agent market.

It’s a win – win! Just sayin…
