Johan Santana (4-2 3.41) vs Yovani Gallardo (4-2 3.20)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Jose Reyes are on fire and going for their sixth straight win tonight in Milwaukee. But the Mets are 6-14 on the road, only the Marniers have more losses on the road this season. Santana has put together four consecutive starts going at least 7 innings since getting bombed by the Phillies on May 2nd. The Brewers just won 2 of 3 from the Astros at home but are one of baseball’s worst teams this year with a .404 winning percentage. Gallardo has been more up than down this year but got hit pretty hard in his last start against the Twins. He gave up 4 ER in 6 IP.

Mets – Phillies Rivalry History

Philadelphia Phillies vs New York Mets at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsGrowing up in the 1990’s it’s amazing to think that the Philadelphia Phillies vs. the New York Mets would take shape into a rivalry. Remember the days when the Phillies had some no name manager named Terry Francona?

They were an afterthought to Mets fans. They had very little fan support in a hideous stadium and their big name players, Scott Rolen and Curt Schilling, loved the city so much that they left town.

From 1994-2000 the Phillies didn’t have a winning season. I remember looking at them on the calendar as any other game, almost comparing them to the Montreal Expos, dare I say. It was the Atlanta Braves that we all worried about.

Even throughout Mets history, the Phillies and Mets never really had a rivalry even though the teams’ ballparks were only 91 miles apart. Continue reading “Mets – Phillies Rivalry History”

Mets Must Pursue Roy Oswalt

MLB: Houston Astros at Los Angeles Dodgers

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsHouston Astros’ ace Roy Oswalt recently told management he wanted to be traded.

The Mets have lost three starting pitchers in the last two weeks, two to injury and one to… well, awfulness.

I’m not the only one who sees a fit here, right?

Oswalt’s W-L isn’t the best this season at 2-6, but that’s heavily influenced due to a terrible Houston team behind him. His ERA is 2.66 (career 3.21) and he has 60 strikeouts on the year, putting him on pace for 221.

Oswalt would be under the Mets’ control for the remainder of this season and next season, with a club option for 2012, so this move would be more than just a four-month rental. It would set our top three starting pitchers as Johan Santana, Oswalt, and Mike Pelfrey. Not sure there’s a better 1-2-3 in the majors. Continue reading “Mets Must Pursue Roy Oswalt”

Yankees-Mets Series Renews Inter-League Hype

Joe Mauer

Two years ago I wrote about why I love inter-league games. And I still haven’t changed my mind. The Mets-Yankees series was fantastic. The games were competitive and the final game Sunday night was a nail-biter right down to the last K-Rod strike out of A-Rod. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I understand why some people are done with the annual Yankees series’ and inter-league games in general. But I’m really pumped for Detroit and Minnesota coming to New York next month. They’re both playing really well right now, 1 and 2 in the AL Central. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneua are players that I rarely get to see. I’d pay to see those guys play and I don’t have to degrade myself by going to Yankee Stadium to do it.

Since 1997 we’ve heard players say that the Yankees-Mets series is just another series. But there definitely seems to be some extra fire on the field from my perspective. I don’t buy what they’re selling at all.

A Johan Santana-Justin Verlander match up would be fantastic. Sure, it doesn’t have the same impact in the standings as a National League game. But I just like to watch good players play. Especially when I don’t get to see them frequently except on Baseball Tonight highlights. So I’m renewing my praise of inter-league games. Major League Baseball got this one right.

Mets 6 – Yankees 4 May 23, 2010

New York Mets Johan Santana reacts after the Mets pulled off a double play on New York Yankees Brett Gardner in their MLB game in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets got a huge game from Johan Santana and Jason Bay to take two of three from the Yankees. Santana was rock solid through 7.2 IP only giving up 1 ER. He started to get into trouble in the eighth but he had been in shut down mode throughout the game only giving up the one run in the seventh.

Jason Bay has been starting to break out for a few games. He’s been hitting the ball well but still hadn’t shown any real power. Until tonight. Bay was 2 for 2 with 2 homers. He was totally on the ball. It’s exactly what we’ve been expecting from him for the past seven weeks.

K-Rod made things interesting in the ninth. After Ryota Igarashi returned from the disabled list with a stinker. He allowed 2 hits and a walk before he needed help. K-Rod gave up two hits also and faced A-Rod as the winning run. It was a long at-bat and really tense but K-Rod got the strikeout to win the game. It shouldn’t have been that tight but a win is a win.

It’s a very nice series win for the Mets and may just keep the pink slip away from Jerry Manuel for a while.
