Game Preview: Padres at Mets [Game 7] April 13, 2009

San Diego Padres logoSan Diego Padres (5-2 Road: 0-0) at New York Mets (3-3 Home: 0-0) 7:10 pm

Walter Silva (0-0 3.60) vs. Mike Pelfrey (1-0 7.20)

TV: SNY, ESPN  RadioWFAN

What to watch: We all know that the game is going to play second fiddle to the opening ceremonies of Citi Field tonight. But there is a game to play. Its going to be a cold one tonight so bundle up if you’re lucky enough to be going to the home opener. The Padres are Jake Peavey, Adrian Gonzalez, and a bunch of nobodies. They do come into town on a four game winning streak after sweeping the Giants. Silva pitched five innings of 2-run ball against the Dodgers in his first start. He’s a 32 year old getting his first taste of the major league game. Pelfrey got a win against the Reds in his first start even though he didn’t pitch particularly well. We need more from Pelfrey if the Mets are going to be contenders this season.

Mets Edge Reds 9-7 April 8, 2009

Mike Pelfrey started the game terribly throwing 44 pitches in the first inning, laboring to find the strike zone. It didn’t help that Angel Hernandez was behind the plate tonight either. The Reds put up four runs in the first, notably on a 3-run homer by Joey Votto, the young Reds first baseman.

The Mets got two runs in the first inning as well on a 2-run shot by Carlos Delgado. The Mets offensive hero of the night was Delgado who had four RBI’s on the night.

Pelfrey only last five innings which turned out to be just enough to get the win. The bullpen stumbled a bit as well. Bobby Parnell gave up two walks but no runs in his inning of work. Pedro Feliciano got hit in the seventh, giving up two runs in .2 innings. Even J.J. Putz gave up a run in the eighth. And Francisco Rodriguez reminded me of last season’s bullpen disasters by loading the bases in the ninth inning on two walks and a questionable error on Delgado. Fortunately, he got out of the inning unscathed which was a nice change from last season.

The Mets go to 2-0 on the season and get things going early tomorrow with a 12:35 pm game time.

Mets News Top Stories- April 8, 2009

NEW YORK - APRIL 08: Ryan Church #19 of the N...

The Mets endured one of the dreaded road days off yesterday in Cincinnati. If you’ve ever been there you know that its not one of the most exciting cities in the United States. The reports were that the most entertaining thing that the Mets could find to do yesterday was go to the movies. Apparently, the city is so boring that they decided to do a double feature and kill the whole day at the movies. If that’s not an indictment of a boring city, I don’t know what is. The Mets chance to enjoy the entertaining city of Cincinnati comes to an end today when they go back to work against the Reds.

Onto today’s top stories:

The Sporting News is reporting that Bronson Arroyo will start for the Reds against the Mets tomorrow. He’s been suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome but he had a cortisone shot and is feeling good enough to pitch. Micah Owings was going to take his place in the Reds rotation.

Ben Shipgel of The New York Times recounts the whole Ryan Church concussion saga from last season. He talks about how the Gary Sheffield signing will impact Church’s playing time.  Shipgel says he can’t understand why the Mets are pushing Church so hard this season. It’s simple… They expect more from him than what they’re getting. The Mets think Church is capable of doing more than he’s shown.

Joel Sherman of the NY Post talks about the Mets bullpen and how Daniel Murphy and Ryan Church both played well on Monday. The Sheffield signing could push both of them to step up their games or lose playing time.

Saturday’s game against the Marlins won’t be televised for the first hour of the game. It’s scheduled to start at 6:10 pm because there’s a concert by rap star Flo Rida after the game. SNY is scheduled to broadcast the game but Fox has exclusive rights on Saturday’s until 7:05 pm.

Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated writes another column about how Mike Pelfrey and other young pitchers are at risk of injury or regression in performance because of their increased innings pitched at a young age. At this point, Verducci is pretty much making a living off of this theory of his that most major league teams don’t subscribe to. I’m not saying that Verducci is wrong about this. But he needs to find another topic to write about. He’s beating a dead horse now. We all know about his grand theory about young pitchers. Move on now Tom.

Game Preview: Mets At Reds [Game 2] April 8, 2009

Cincinnati RedsNew York Mets (1-0 Road: 1-0) vs. Cincinnati Reds (0-1 Home: 0-1) 7:10 pm

Mike Pelfrey (0-0 0.00) vs. Edinson Volquez (0-0 0.00)

TV: SNY RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets face stiff competition in Volquez, who came over from the Texas Rangers last season in the Josh Hamilton trade and quickly established himself as a front-line starter. He was 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA. He had 206 K’s in 196 innings against only 93 walks. The Mets knocked him around in his one start against them last season. He pitched 5 innings and gave up 4 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks.

Pelfrey pitched two games against the Reds last season going 0-1 with a 4.85 ERA. He also had somewhat of a breakout year but not even close to what Volquez did for the Reds.

Mets Over Orioles 9-8 To Complete Spring Training

mike-pelfreyThe Mets are finally headed back to New York after what feels like the longest spring training in history. The WBC lengthened spring training, seven weeks long, was arduous at best.

Mike Pelfrey wasn’t very good today, only pitching four innings and giving up eight runs on ten hits. Pelfrey only got 13 pitches in his previous start because of a rain delay, so he may have had a little rust at this early point in the season. I’m not concerned about Pelfrey at all. I like the progress that he’s made over the last year.

The Mets are flying back to New York tonight for a few days before the season starts on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. The exhibition games gets started at Citi Field on Friday night against the Boston Red Sox at 6:10pm and again on Saturday afternoon at 1:10pm. Both games will be televised, Friday on SNY and Saturday on WPIX.

Its exciting to see the Mets play at Citi Field but I don’t get too fired up about exhibition games. I’m not going to Citi Field until the games count. At the prices the Mets are charging, and considering the economy, I want to get the most for my entertainment dollars. For those of you that are going to the Red Sox games, I’m not saying that its a bad idea. I’m just saying that I prefer to see the Mets starters putting in a full game and playing to win.

I’m ready for the season to start!

Audio: Mike Pelfrey, Mets News From ESPN Radio

Mike PelfreyMike Pelfrey joins Don La Greca on ESPN Radio to talk about his performance this spring. He also touches on comparing Jerry Manuel to Willie Randolph. And he admits that he occasionally lies about how he feels when the manager or coach asks him on the mound. I liked that he also plays COD (Call Of Duty).

Skip ahead to the 28 minute mark to listen to Rich Coutinho on Oliver Perez‘ poor performance today. They have some audio from Dan Warthen talking about Perez being out of shape. They discuss the fact that Perez gained weight since he left the Mets three weeks ago and the affect its having on his pitching.

Santana Resumes Mets Spring Thursday

Johan SantanaMets ace Johan Santana will get back on the mound in a start against the Florida Marlins on Thursday in Port St. Lucie. The game is an unusual 7:10pm start on SNY and MLB Network.

Santana has pitched several successful bullpen sessions and batting practices since experiencing tightness in his left elbow.

If Santana pitches well this could quell some of the concern surrounding the fifthe spot in the rotation. Right now, with Mike Pelfrey slightly injured, Santana not ready to pitch in games yet, and the fifth starter candidates flopping badly Mets fans are extremely concerned about the rotation. And rightuflly so.

If Santana and Pelfrey can solidify their spots this week it’ll go a long way toward making us feel like the Mets rotation is going to be okay this season. Mike Pelfrey is scheduled to start on Saturday against the Washington Nationals in PSL.

If all goes well with Santana and Pelfrey we can start to remember that the fifth starter is the the FIFTH starter. There are several guys that the Mets can rotate in and out to find soemthing that works. I realize that nothing is working at this point. But let’s worry about the first and second spots in the rotation this week as the priority.
