Colorado Rockies (8-2) at New York Mets (4-7)  12:10pm

Jorge De La Rosa (1-0 1.74) vs. R.A. Dickey (1-1 2.45)

Greg Reynolds (0-0 3.00) vs. Chris Capuano (1-0 6.75)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: We’ve got a single admission doubleheader this afternoon. You don’t get many of those anymore. So enjoy if you have tickets for the game today.

The first game is the premier pitching matchup of the series. De La Rosa pitched two pretty good games so far but hasn’t gotten deeper than 5. 1 IP yet. Dickey had a rough start against the Nationals when he broke a nail during the game but appears to be 100% for today’s game.

Reynolds made one decent start against the Pirates going 6 IP and allowing 2 runs. Capuano made one start against the Nationals and wasn’t that good but got a win. He went 6 IP and allowed 4 runs.

The Mets need to dig out of a hole here down 2-0 in the series after losing a home series to the Nationals. The season could get really ugly today or get back on track if the Mets can sweep the doubleheader.

Nationals 6 – Mets 2 April 8, 2011

The lowly Nationals ruined the Mets home opener by a score of 6-2. R.A. Dickey had one of his worst starts as a Met, fighting through a broken nail on his pitching hand. The game was announced as a sell out despite the empty seats and availability of tickets online as late as last night when I last checked.

The Mets offense couldn’t come through in the clutch leaving 7 runners on base including 3 by Angel Pagan. The team, as a whole, only scrounged up 7 hits and 2 walks in the game.

The home opener was a major disappointment. Nearly as disappointing as Tim Byrdak and his 10.80 ERA who allowed the Nationals to get a rally going in the eighth. Bobby Parnell came in and threw gas on the fire. The bullpen could be a sore spot for this team.

Washington Nationals (2-4) at New York Mets (3-3)  4:10pm

Jordan Zimmermann (0-1, 3.00) vs.R.A. Dickey (1-0. 0.00)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets home opener isn’t sold out but it will be fun for a big crowd today. The Nationals come to town after losing three of their last four games. Zimmermann had a good start in a loss to Atlanta. He went 6 IP and gave up 2 earned runs on 4 hits and 3 walks.

Dickey had a very good start against the Marlins despite not being as sharp as he was at the end of last season. He threw 6 shutout innings in Florida in his season debut. Hopefully, he gives the fans something to cheer about today for the opener at Citi Field.

Mets 9 – Marlins 2 April 3, 2011

The Mets put a beat down on Javier Vazquez early in the game today. They put up 7 runs in the first three innings and the game was effectively over. The Mets win the road series which is something we didn’t see much of last year at all. R.A. Dickey got the win although he wasn’t as sharp as we saw him last season. It’s a good start to the season winning this one in Miami.

The Mets offense went off on Vazquez and the subsequent Marlins pitchers with 8  hits and a staggering 9 walks. Willie Harris continued his hot hitting with a home run in the first inning. Ike Davis tacked on another one in the third. It was a true team effort with the Mets getting hits up and down the lineup.

Dickey only gave up 1 unearned run in 6 IP, but he did give up 5 hits and 3 walks. So he had runners on base frequently and was able to get out of jams. Chris Capuano didn’t look good at all relieving Dickey. He gave up 3 hits, a walk, and a run in 0.2 IP. Not a good start to the season for Capuano.

The Mets are off tomorrow and head to Philly on Tuesday. Hopefully, they can another road series win there too.

New York Mets (1-1) vs. Florida Marlins (1-1) 1:10pm ET

R.A. Dickey (0-0, NA) vs. Javier Vazquez (0-0, NA)

TV: SNY, FSFL         Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Marlins play the rubber game of the series this afternoon. Expect Carlos Beltran to get the day off, maybe play as a pinch hitter if needed. Dickey gets his first start of the year and I’ll be curious to see if last year’s dream season continues this year.

Vazquez has a career record of 10-9 with a 3.16 ERA against the Mets in 25 games.

Dickey Signs 2 Yr Deal – Is This The Last Big Contract The Mets Sign? Ever?

The big pitching story of the week is R.A. Dickey’s “huge” contract. It’s a huge contract in terms of this is the most expensive contract the Mets may be signing for quite a while due to the Wilpon’s new financial troubles. I haven’t heard the final numbers of this contract but sources are reporting this contract to be 2 yrs, $8 million with a club option for a 3rd year.

On a side note R.A. did say that after the 2010 season, he was going to compete in a triathlon — a 25-mile bicycle ride, a six-mile run and a one-mile swim. No word on how that turned out but triathlon training is notorious for preventing injuries as your working out the vast majority of muscles in your body. I know someone must be able to locate Dickey’s triathlon results? Continue reading “Mets Pitching Report – Dickey Signed, Mets Add To The Bullpen Mix”

Mets Sign Dickey To 2-Year Contract

R. A. Dickey

The Mets and R.A. Dickey have avoided arbitration with a multi-year contract. Several sources are reporting the contract as 2-years/$8 million with an option for a third year. The Mets and Dickey knew they were going to land somewhere near $4 million for 2011 and this contract allows the Mets to buy out one or two years of free agency from Dickey.

Overall, it’s a good contract for both parties. Dickey was a real professional last season and gave 100% effort in every start even when the team behind him wasn’t very good.

Dickey had some great splits that you like to see last year too. He made 11 starts at home to a 1.99 ERA over 81.1 IP. He also had an incredible July, making 6 starts going 1-3 with a 1.51 ERA over 41.2 IP. He also had a complete game 1-hitter against the Phillies on Aug. 13 at home.
