Mets Spring Training News: Reyes, Murphy, Jacobs

Today was my second day at Digital Domain Park and there was a ton of news today:

  • Jose Reyes will start the season on the disabled list
  • Daniel Murphy will start the season on the disabled list with a sprained knee
  • Mike Jacobs will make the team and probably start at first base on opening day
  • Chris Carter and Frank Catalonotto are vying for the final roster spot
  • The Mets are setting up the rotation to be Johan Santana, John Maine, Jon Niese, Mike Pelfrey, and Oliver Perez

That’s a lot to digest. While you’re doing that, I’ll tell you about my day today. I started out watching the morning work out and checking out the player’s cars being shipped back to New York. I got some great pictures of the work out that you can see in the slide show below.

Mets Spring Training- Oliver Perez Fails Again

What a let down for my first day at Mets spring training this year. Oliver Perez gets rocked for 7 runs including giving up 3 home runs. Even Johan Santana had a rough day against the Triple-A Cardinals team. It was tough all the way around. Alex Cora got hit by a pitch in the hip and came out of the game too.

It’s really beyond anyone’s capability to comprehend what’s going on with Perez. There’s no consistency from game to game. And I’m a firm believer that there never will be. He may be able to put a few good starts together but not enough to warrant anyone’s expectations that he can do so with any regularity.

The only good news of the day was that Jose Reyes played in the minor league game and went 1 for 5. He didn’t go crazy on the bases, but did get out and do some running. It sounds like Reyes is still holding out hope to play on opening day. Even if he doesn’t make it into the lineup next week, he’s not far away from being ready to play.

Oliver Perez at Digital Domain Park Today

It’s still strange to write Digital Domain instead of Tradition Field. But I’ll be there for today’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals with Oliver Perez on the mound. There’s no denying that Perez is one of the keys to the Mets’ success in 2010. So I can’t wait to get a first-hand look at him this year.

I also read a tweet from David Lennon that Johan Santana is throwing his tune-up for opening day against the minor leaguers today. I’ll have to see if I can find him on one of the side fields.

I’ll try to post some images and posts from my phone while I’m there.

Video: Jose Reyes Returns From Thyroid Problem

I thought it was a day to post some good news about the Mets. After the negative news about Dwight Gooden getting arrested again today, we need something positive to end the day on. That’s where Jose Reyes comes in, returning to spring training possibly in time to play on opening day.

Brian Costa of NJ.com put up some video of Reyes taking batting practice from the right side with Jerry Manuel watching carefully. The background noise is pretty annoying but it’s good to see Reyes swinging the bat again after two weeks away from the team with a thyroid problem.

Put The Rolaids Away For Now… Jose Reyes is Back

Without having a chance to listen to WFAN and hear what other fans in the area were saying I got the gut feeling that the injury curse hanging over this team might have been lifted. I’m feeling optimistic again, “first time, long time”.

I also like that the experiment batting Reyes third is over according to Jerry Manuel. I had been shaking my head for a while as to the logic behind moving one of the most explosive lead-off hitters in the game into the third slot. Changes the game completely and certainly doesn’t give Reyes a chance to set the tone for the game.

So now that Reyes is back and in the lead-off spot I’m getting a little excited for opening day. If I was a betting man, I would bet that Reyes will be the first batter of the new season and he’ll be going for a triple…

Mets Fans, Ike Davis Disappointed in Cut

For those of us that were dreaming of some offensive production at first base this season, that dream just died a little today. Ike Davis was cut from the major league camp and sent to work out with the minor league players. He’ll start the season at Triple-A Buffalo but it shouldn’t be long before he shows up in Queens.

Davis was asked by reporters if he was holding out hope of making the big league club. From the Daily  News:

“Of course,” he said, “that’s your dream as a baseball player. But it’s not right for right now. Hopefully someday it will be. Just to know that I’m not far behind is pretty comforting. To see your goal is not that far away is pretty cool.”

For those of you that are regular readers, you know how down I’ve been on Daniel Murphy as a full-time first baseman. I’ll be one of a million fans screaming if Murphy is hitting .260 with 2 HR’s at the end of April, and Davis is still tearing it up in Buffalo.

I won’t go crazy about a young guy like Davis starting the season in the minors right now. But if it looks like he’s the Mets’ organization’s best first baseman at the end of April, I’ll be calling for the early hook on Murphy. And I get the feeling that I won’t be the only fan beating the drum for Davis.
