Mets 7 – Dodgers 3 April 28, 2010

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets completed the sweep against the Dodgers this afternoon, the second consecutive sweep amid a 9-1 home stand. It’s been an incredible week and a half for the Mets surging into first place in the NL East.

The pitching was good once again today with John Maine going 6 innings and giving up only two earned runs on a Russell Martin homer in the fifth. He got through six on 102 pitches, which is pretty good for Maine. His velocity doesn’t appear to have improved. His fastball was still in the high 80’s. But he was firing strikes right from the start and he ended up striking out 9.

The bullpen cleaned up the last three innings without giving up a run. Francisco Rodriguez did give up  1 hit and 1 walk in the ninth. Other than that, the bullpen was spotless.

On offense, Angel Pagan and Jeff Francoeur both had 2 RBI’s and the Mets, as a team, had 5 two-out RBI’s. That’s some serious clutch hitting. The new lineup with Jose Reyes batting third is definitely working right now.

Ike Davis continues to chip in on a daily basis. He was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. He seems to add something on offense in every game. His season average is up to .355 with a .424 OBP and .980 OPS. Not bad for a rookie.

The first place Mets are off tomorrow before heading to Philly for a weekend series.

Mets Wrap Up Successful Homestand – Look Ahead

The Mets have had a big home stand against the Cubs, Braves, and Dodgers. David Daniels writes that the next series in Philadelphia could set the tone for the rest of the season.

Are we getting excited yet!?! Our Met’s are now on a 6 game winning streak and hopefully we can make it a 7 game winning streak before heading off to Philly. This was a wildly successful homestand.

Yes, It’s a little early in the year but I’m so looking forward to this weekend series with the Phillies. I love the rivalry. Considering the rough start the Mets had, catching the Phillies will make this series that much more entertaining.

Jon Niese will open the series Friday followed by Mike Pelfrey and then Johan Santana. The Phillies pitchers have yet to be announced. This lines up our top two pitchers for a crucial series that will set the tone for the entire year. Will the Phillies embarrass the Mets or will the Mets show they can play toe-to-toe with the defending NL Champs and leave Philly in first? Los Angeles Dodgers (8-12) at New York Mets (12-9)  1:10 pm

Josh Towers (0-0 -.–) vs. John Maine (0-1 8.64)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are going for the sweep today against the Dodgers. If successful, it’ll be their second consecutive series sweep. The Dodgers are throwing Towers out there who’s only started 27 games in the last three years between the Yankees and Blue Jays. Maine left his last start after 3.2 IP when he felt pain in his left arm. He really hasn’t pitched well at all this season and could be on the brink of losing his spot in the rotation if he has another poor start.

Mets 10 – Dodgers 5 April 27, 2010 Game 2

New York Mets David Wright slaps hands with Jason Bay at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets put on an offensive show in the second game of the double header tonight. They swept the double header today and won their sixth straight game. This is the kind of game that I expected to see a lot of this season with the Mets scoring plenty of runs.

Oliver Perez started the game but didn’t last long. He only went 3.2 IP and gave up 3 ER. Jerry Manuel clearly had a quick hook ready for Perez. But Hisanori Takahashi put up another great long relief performance going 3.1 IP giving up only 1 ER.

The star on offense was David Wright surprisingly. He was hearing the boo’s in the first game. In the second game he went 3 for 4 with 4 RBI’s including a bases clearing triple in the sixth inning. Hopefully, that’ll get Wright going again.

Ike Davis chipped in with 3 RBI’s after going 1 for 3 and Henry Blanco was 2 for 4 in the game.

The Mets will try to finish off a second consecutive series sweep when the play the Dodgers tomorrow afternoon.

Mets 4 – Dodgers 1 Apirl 27, 2010 Game 1

New York Mets starting pitcher Johan Santana slaps hands with David Wright at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets completed their fifth straight win and fourth shutout of the season behind Johan Santana’s 6 innings. He didn’t have his best stuff and his velocity was down today. The fastball was in the upper 80’s. But he got through six innings giving up 4 hits and 3 walks and getting the win.

Fernando Nieve and Pedro Feliciano tacked on three more shutout innings after Santana left the game.

The Mets didn’t have a ton of offense, which has been the case often lately. But they had enough to get the win. They had only 8 hits as a team and left 13 runners on base. Luis Castillo had 2 RBI single in the 7th inning and Jason Bay hit his first homer of the year in the second inning.

Report: Tony Bernazard Was Mets’ Scapegoat

Colorado Rockies vs New York Mets at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets 2009 season was basically a season of misery on the field. And off the field it was a complete soap opera. The biggest story of the 92-loss season turned out to be the behavior and firing of Tony Bernazard as their VP of player development.

Among the accusations against Bernazard were:

  • He took his shirt off and challenged the Binghamton Mets to a fight
  • He got into an argument with Francisco Rodriguez
  • He publicly yelled at a Mets employee when he didn’t get the seat that he wanted at a game

In the strangest firing of all time, Omar Minaya announced the firing last July 27 and then blamed it on Daily News writer Adam Rubin and his jealous desire to work for the Mets. Or something like that. It was difficult to understand exactly what Minaya was implying. Continue reading “Report: Tony Bernazard Was Mets’ Scapegoat”

Game 2: Charlie Haeger (0-2 6.46) vs. Oliver Perez (0-2 3.71)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Dodgers play a single admission double header today. It’s a good day to cut out of work early to see Santana in the first game. He’s only given up 1 ER in his last 13.1 IP and the Mets have won three of the four games he started this season. You never know what to expect from Perez. Although he’s only given up 3 ER in his last 11.1 IP.
