Mets 5 – Pirates 1 August 21, 2010

July 19, 2010 - Phoenix, AZ, United States - epa02254193 New York Mets David Wright watches his fifth inning double down the right field line, during their Major League Baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, 19 July, 2010.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe game was originally delayed by rain in Pittsburgh and later called in the sixth inning with the Mets getting a win. It’s the Mets first road series win against a National League team all season. Jon Niese pitched really well again and got a complete game win going 5 innings and only allowing 1 run on 5 hits.

The Mets scored a run in the first on a strange play when Chris Carter struck out, the ball got away from the catcher, and Jose Reyes was at third and took home on the throw to first. Reyes slid into home head first and looked like he might have been injured on the play. But he stayed in the game. David Wright hit a long homer to center in the fifth, a 3-run shot, that put the Mets way ahead and sealed the win.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets had an offensive explosion in support of Mike Pelfrey. It’s hard to remember the last time the Mets put up 7 runs in a game. Pelfrey had a pretty good game going 8 innings and giving up only 1 earned run. He started very strong and then struggled a bit in the middle innings before finishing strong.

I was completely shocked that the Mets had 15 hits and 1 walk. Oddly, this kind of game came with Chris Carter hitting cleanup. Carter came through going 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI’s. Jose Reyes and David Wright had 3 hits apiece. With 15 hits just about everyone got in on the action.

It’s a nice way to start a series for two teams that are out of the race.

Astros 4 – Mets 3 August 17, 2010

June 13, 2010: David Wright for the New York Mets in action during an interleague game against the hometown Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. The Mets completed the 3-game sweep by beating the Orioles 11 - 4.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets lost another heartbreaker in the bottom of the eighth inning. Johan Santana went 8 innings but got touched for two homers by Hunter Pence. He hit a 3-run homer in the first and the game winner solo shot in the eighth. It wasn’t Santana’s finest game giving up 4 runs, but he did have good control only walking 1 and making it through 8 innings on 103 pitches.

The Mets had decent offense going with 8 hits and 4 walks. The got to Nelson Figueroa in the first for a run and it looked like it might be a good night. Jose Reyes and Josh Thole were both 2 for 4 and Reyes had a steal. David Wright hit a solo shot in the eighth to tie it but Santana couldn’t hold it.

We’re going to see some different pitching scenarios like this for the rest of the season with the Mets operating without a closer.

Carlos Beltran’s Future with the Mets

July 23, 2010 Los Angeles, CA..Mets Carlos Beltran in action during the Major League Baseball game between the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Mets defeated the Dodgers, 6-1..Josh Thompson/CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIt’s been over two weeks since Carlos Beltran’s return from his knee injury and you can just about stick a fork in the Mets. Prior to his return, I was cautiously optimistic that Beltran would be capable of igniting a power surge in the middle of the lineup. This has not been the case. Instead, we’ve seen him not be able to bat his weight and not be able to display his graceful mobility in center field, suggesting that he is better suited for a corner outfield position at this stage in his career. With another month and half left of what just about promises to be meaningless baseball, Carlos Beltran’s future can be a topic of discussion.

Should the Mets shop him around to other teams this off-season or no? He is Carlos Beltran, and when healthy, he undoubtedly provides a game changing presence. My answer to that question is ‘no’ based on the fact that he will be playing for a new contract in 2011 with his biggest fan Scott Boras by his side. Beltran also has a full no-trade clause and would likely request a contract extension and only accept a trade to a few teams to waive that clause. http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets were victimized by a great game by Roy Halladay and their own poor fielding. Halladay went 8 strong innings only giving up 4 hits. Pat Misch was decent giving up 4 runs over 6 innings but only 1 run was earned. The Mets had 3 errors from Misch, David Wright, and Ruben Tejada. It was ugly in the field and that led to 3 runs for the Phillies.

The Mets had nothing going on offense really against Halladay. Jose Reyes did have a triple with no outs but the Mets couldn’t bring him in. And they did manage to load the bases against Ryan Madson in the ninth with two outs but Josh Thole struck out to end it.

Francisco Rodriguez did make it into the game in the ninth. There was a lot of booing but it was a good idea to get that first appearance after his arrest out of the way, even if it wasn’t a save situation.

The Mets and Phils will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow night on ESPN.

Mets 1 – Rockies 0 August 10, 2010

Apr. 27, 2010 - Flushing, NY, USA - April 25, 2010: New York Mets starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey strides toward the plate during a rain-filled Major League Baseball game vs. visiting Atlanta Braves at Citi Field in Flushing, NY. He allowed no runs while scattering 5 hits and 5 walks over 5 innings. He got the win to improve his season record to 4-0 in the Mets 1-0 victory in a game that was called one strike into the top 6th inning on account of rain.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets finally got a good game from Mike Pelfrey for the first time in a month and a half. He went 7 shutout innings and threw 122 pitches only allowing 4 hits. He didn’t go overboard with the splitter tonight. It seems like the league has caught up with that. It was a great game that Pelfrey needed badly.

There wasn’t much offense for the Mets but they were up against Ubaldo Jimenez. They only had 4 hits but did have 5 walks. The only run of the game was on a Jose Reyes sacrifice fly in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out.

The Mets looked good for the first time in quite a while. It’s a nice way to start this series.

Braves 8 – Mets 3 August 4, 2010

May 28, 2010- Milwaukee, WI. Miller Park..New York Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey ..Milwaukee Brewers won over the New York Mets 2-0, taking the first game of the 3 game series against the Mets...Mike McGinnis / CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIt’s games like this that make me think that there’s little to no hope left for the 2010 season. Mike Pelfrey couldn’t make it through the fifth inning after giving up 5 runs (3 earned). He gave up back to back homers to Jones and McCann in the third inning. It’s like he completely lost his control and hasn’t been able to find it for more than a month.

It was one of the sloppiest games the Mets have played in a long time with 4 errors. They had 3 errors in the sixth inning. Jose Reyes had two throwing errors himself! This game was a complete joke.

The Mets offense only had 6 hits but did have 6 walks. Luis Castillo was 2 for 3 and seems to have found his slap hitting stroke recently.

The Mets lose the series in Atlanta, have an off-day tomorrow, then head to Philly. It’s hard to imagine them having a chance of winning a series in Philly.
