Mets’ Oliver Perez Should Refuse Minors

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsIt’s probably safe to say at this point that we’re all tired of Oliver Perez and his lack of focus, free-wheeling side-arming, and general lack of any semblance of pitching ability. Now, we’re hearing from the NY Post that some anonymous Mets players want him off the roster. I’m not so sure I believe that story from the Post. But it’s coming to a point soon when the Mets will have to do something about Perez.

John Fitzgerald of Mets Today wrote a good post today summarizing the different storylines surrounding Perez and the Mets attempts to get him to agree to go to the minors. The organization is continuing to try to convince him and his agent, Scott Boras, that it’s in his best interest to work out his problems in Port St. Nowhere or Buffalo.

I’m going to reiterate what I wrote two weeks ago. If you look at the situation from Perez’ perspective, he should refuse an assignment to the minors. Page 63 of the MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement for 2007-2011 is very specific about assignment of contracts. Brewers 8 – Mets 6 May 29, 2010

They started the inning looking good with a run scoring double by Jason Bay only to give it up an more at the hands of Fernando Nieve. Nieve was dreadful in his first start of the season giving up a grand slam to Cory Hart in the first and another run in the second before he hit the showers.

Oliver Perez made an appearance to give up 3 more runs over 2 IP. That raises his season WHIP to 1.97 which seems almost impossibly bad. Hart touched Perez up for his second homer of the game and third in two days as well.

The Mets did have some offense in the game putting up 6 runs on 9 hits and 4 walks. But they struck out 12 times in the game. Angel Pagan was the biggest culprit with 3. Ike Davis was 1 for 5 with a 3-run homer (5th of the season).

The Mets have lost the series in Milwaukee and need to salvage tomorrow’s game to avoid the sweep.

Mets Starting Pitching Options – Niese and Perez

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets lost two of their starting pitchers in Florida, Jon Niese due to a hamstring injury, and Oliver Perez due to being dreadful.

Hisanori Takahashi will start in Jon Niese’s place on Friday night, while R.A. Dickey will start in Perez’s place tonight against the Washington Nationals.

Takahashi has seemed to relish in the long man spot, a la Darren Oliver in 2006 for the Mets, and he should be kept there as he’s been extremely valuable in that spot. R.A. Mets Links: Oliver Perez, No Offense, More

The Mets are in a bad way right now. Dropping below .500 yesterday could be a dangerous sign for the 2010 season and where it’s headed. Expect the Wilpons to enter their first decision point in two weeks. If the Mets aren’t moving in the right direction at the end of May, it could spell the end for Jerry Manuel as manager. I would also expect Dan Warthen and Howard Johnson to be fired as well. If Manuel, Warthen, and HoJo make it into June in their current jobs that’s a very good sign for them.

So much has happened over the last few days, here are the links.

The Mets are 4-11 on the road this year and have no offense in those games at all. You would think they would take advantage of getting away from Citi Field but they haven’t. It’s been just the opposite.

It’s been well documented that Oliver Perez lost his spot in the rotation yesterday. But ESPN broke the news that Omar Minaya brought up the possibility of going to the minors and Perez refused. Perez has nine years in the bigs and doesn’t have to agree to go to the minors if he doesn’t want to. I wouldn’t either. If he went, he would have no control over when he came back. They could leave him in the minors all season. The difference between this situation and Steve Trachsel going to the minors in 2005 is that the Mets would have released Trachsel. They won’t release Perez. He doesn’t have to worry about that because of his big contract. There’s no motivation for him to go to the minors. Audio: Oliver Perez Meltdown Reaction

The situation with Oliver Perez has really become intolerable at this point. The Mets can’t keep trotting him out there every fifth day and expect to be blown out in 20% of their games. It’s hurting morale and it’s hurting the bullpen, not to mention the Mets spot in the NL East standings.

There’s been a lot of reaction this morning about Perez’ latest meltdown on the mound. He blamed the cold weather for his last stinker against the Giants but he didn’t have that excuse in Miami last night.

Marlins 7 – Mets 2 May 14, 2010

It’s actually become sad to see him getting bombed. That’s how bad it is. He gave up 7 ER’s tonight in 3.1 IP. Of those runs, 4 were home runs including 3 in the fourth inning and Dan Uggla had 2 in the game. It was beyond ugly.

The Mets had only 4 hits as a team for the second night in a row. Only Angel Pagan did anything offensively. He had a 2 run double in the fifth and that was the offense for the game.

The Mets are just getting blown out of the park right now. Tonight is their third straight loss and five of the last six. Ugh.
