Mets starting pitcher John Maine throws against the Rockies in the first inning in their MLB game in Denver

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets lose another series to the Cardinals. They haven’t won a series all season. It’s about as ugly as it can get in April. They only had 4 hits in the game and scored three runs in the third inning and one of those was unearned on Adam Wainwright’s throwing error.

Wainwright went the distance tonight only giving up the 4 hits. His opposition, John Maine, wasn’t great but looked better than he has in his previous starts. It did take him 115 pitches to get through five innings but that’s not unusual for Maine.

The goat of the game is Ryota Igarashi who gave up the game losing 2-run homer to Ryan Ludwick in the eighth inning. The Mets had to rely on Tobi Stoner to get through 2.1 IP and he did alright for a guy just in from Buffalo giving up 1 run on 3 hits and a walk. They really had no choice after last night’s marathon game blew out everyone in the bullpen.

Mets' Wright throws his helmet after striking out against the Cardinals in MLB game in St Louis

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThis game was so crazy I can’t even describe the whole thing without writing a novel. I’ll hit the highlights and make sure you check out the messy box score link at the bottom of the post. The game had a bunch of great defensive plays and sitting on the edge of your seat moments. If you didn’t put seven hours into watching this one, here are the highlights:

  • There wasn’t a run scored until Jeff Francoeur hit a sac fly to score Jose Reyes in the top of the 19th
  • Alex Cora had a game saving catch diving into the stands to catch a fly ball while he was playing first base, of all things
  • The Cardinals loaded the bases three times in extras without scoring
  • Of course, Yadier Molina singled home Albert Pujols in the bottom of the 19th to tie it
  • K-Rod blew the save in the 19th
  • Mike Pelfrey got the first save of his career by pitching the 20th inning
  • Two position players pitched for the Cardinals: Felipe Lopez and Jeff Mather

This game was wild. There’s usually one of these crazy games every few years. So it’s good to get it out of the way early in the season. They’ll play on national TV again tomorrow night on ESPN in the rubber game of the series.

MLB: Mets vs Brewers SEP 3

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets lost their seventh game of the year and it’s already starting to get old. They did go up against Chris Carpenter who threw 7 innings and only gave up 1 unearned run. So there is the built in excuse for losing that they ran into a buzz saw tonight. But I’m getting tired of the excuses over the last year.

The bright spot of the game was Oliver Perez for a change. He went 6.1 IP giving up only 1 run, which scored after he left the game. We haven’t seen many lines like that from Perez over the past couple of years.

But there are no moral victories in professional sports. The Mets  lost. Again. Continue reading “Cardinals 4 – Mets 3 April 16, 2010”

Mets runner Pelfrey scores a run on a fielder's choice as Rockies catcher Olivo fails to find the ball during third inning MLB game in Denver

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets finally got a win after four straight losses before they leave for St. Louis today. They got a very solid game from Mike Pelfrey going seven strong innings. He only gave up 5 hits and no walks with 6 strikeouts. Excellent game from Pelfrey and his second win in two starts. Don’t forget that Pelfrey got lit up in Colorado last September 1st for 6 earned runs over 4 innings. So this was a nice payback for him.

The Mets finally got some timely hitting too. Although there was some bizarre base running in the third inning. Jose Reyes and Luis Castillo got mixed up on a double steal or maybe a missed sign. It was hard to tell but Castillo took off from first while Reyes didn’t move from second. Pelfrey even scored on a botched rundown that you can see in the picture.

It’s a great win but feels a lot like 2009 when every win was cause for celebration.

New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathan Niese throws against the Colorado Rockies in their MLB baseball game in Denver

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets lost their fourth straight game tonight in 10 innings to the Rockies. They have to try to salvage one game in Colorado tomorrow afternoon. The story of the game was that the Mets got another bad start from Jon Niese, battled back to tie it up in the ninth, then lost it on a homer in the tenth.

Niese was pretty bad giving up 5 runs in 5 IP on 99 pitches and hitting two batters. It was just ugly. And it’s even worse following up some rotten starts over the last few days.

The worst part of the game was that the Mets got two men on in the tenth with one out and couldn’t bring a run home. The Mets just can’t seem to hit with runners in scoring position. As a team, the Mets are hitting .180 with runners in scoring position.

Jenry Mejia started the tenth inning and promptly gave up the game losing home run to Chris Iannetta, the first batter he faced. I know that can happen to anyone, but maybe Mejia isn’t ready for this kind of pressure.

It’s another tough loss and they’ll play one more in Colorado tomorrow.

MLB: New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets lost their third straight game to start the series in Colorado. John Maine was crushed for 8 runs in 3 IP. He had absolutely nothing and gave up 6 runs in the third inning with two outs. It’s starting to get ugly again for the Mets, not exactly the hot start that Jerry Manuel talked about all spring.

The Good – nothing

The Bad – Maine was horrible again and appears to have lost velocity; Jason Bay and Angel Pagan muffing a fly in left-center; Fernando Tatis looking uncomfortable at first base on a bad throw from Maine; Fernando Nieve giving up 3 runs in 0.1 IP

Just an awful effort from the Mets. That’s all there is to say. And I hate the live calls coming into the booth during blowouts. It’s so desperate, and  leads to Cohen and Hernandez senselessly defending their employer.

Nationals 5 – Mets 2 April 11, 2010

Florida Marlins at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe game was over in the first inning. The surprise was that the Mets lost this one because of Johan Santana. He was horrible in the first, giving up a grand slam to Josh Willingham. The Mets couldn’t do anything offensively while Livan Hernandez got his revenge on the Mets for releasing him last August.

The Mets lose their second straight home series to start the season. They begin a series in Colorado starting Tuesday night.

Highlights:

  • Santana – 5 IP, 5 ER in the loss
  • Jeff Francoeur – 2 for 3 and hitting .476 on the season; he also had an assist at the plate cutting down Adam Dunn on a beautiful throw
  • The Bullpen – threw 4 more scoreless innings today
  • Mike Jacobs- hit one out in the eighth off Brian Bruney to quiet the boo birds
  • K-Rod- hit Willie Harris in the ninth and didn’t like what Harris had to say about it, the bullpens and benches emptied but it didn’t turn into a fight
