Mets Oliver Perez on Disabled List, MLB Investigating

For the second season in a row, the Mets placed under-performing pitcher Oliver Perez on the disabled list with a convenient knee injury. They’ve been trying to convince Perez to accept an assignment to the minors to work out his problems, but he has refused so far. According to reports, Perez complained on Friday of pain in his right knee, the same one that was scoped last season.

An MRI found tendinitis and Perez was placed on the disabled list. This revelation of a knee injury couldn’t have come at a more convenient time for the Mets with Jon Niese pitching today and needing a roster spot. Apparently, the timing is so convenient that MLB is investigating Perez’ medical records according to the Daily News.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Mets sent Perez for one of those full body scans that you hear advertised on the radio to find any possible problem that would land him on the DL.

Mets’ Jon Niese Makes Rehab Start Monday

According to the Buffalo News, Jon Niese will be making an injury rehab start tomorrow afternoon for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in their series opener against the Syracuse Chiefs. Niese has been on the DL since May 17 with a hamstring strain.

Niese made 16 starts for Buffalo last year with a 3.82 ERA. So far for the Mets this season he’s 1-2 with a 4.79 ERA in eight starts.

Niese’s return will continue to solidify the rotation for the Mets. Fernando Nieve will go back to the bullpen and the Niese will slot back in. The additions of R.A. Dickey and Hisanori Takahashi have made a big difference in the consistency of the Mets over the past two weeks.

Some Met fans have been disappointed. A .500 record in 50 games just isn’t going to beat the Philadelphia Phillies.

Some Met fans are optimistic. The team has had their struggles and they have some chinks in their armor. Oliver Perez, Mike Jacobs, Gary Matthews Jr, and Jeff Francouer haven’t really turned out like they were supposed to. Injuries to John Maine, Jon Niese, Ryota Igarashi and Carlos Beltran have hurt the Mets this season.

So when looking for a team MVP this season it was really tough to find on. Offensively, the Mets have been struggling. David Wright and Jose Reyes struggled for the first 50 games, although it appears Reyes is climbing out of a slump. Jeff Francouer has struggled as well. Luis Castillo has been banged up and Ike Davis has only played in 36 of those 50 games. Jason Bay got off to a rough start and made a bid for MVP but fell short. Johan Santana has been outstanding, along with Mike Pelfrey but they only play once a week. The bullpen has been good, but again they don’t pitch every day. So I came to a surprising conclusion. Poll: Carlos Beltran Return from Injury in 2010?

After a 2009 season filled with injuries and disappointment, we were all ready to turn the page this season and move on. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do that. Carlos Beltran, arguably the Mets best position player, had “unauthorized” knee surgery in January and still hasn’t returned 17 weeks later.

Beltran was scheduled to be out for 12 weeks of recovery but still hasn’t begun baseball activities to get ready to play. There has been rumor and innuendo that Beltran is dogging his rehab in preparation for his walk year in 2011. Maybe that’s true, who knows?

The latest news is that he’ll be back in July, at the earliest. That raises questions that I’d like to hear from you about. When do you think he’ll be back? A poll is embedded below.

Mets’ Igarashi Returns From DL

The Mets will activate Ryota Igarashi from the disabled list today. Manny Acosta is the one that will lose his roster spot. He’ll be optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. The surprise is that Jenrry Mejia isn’t the one being optioned. There have been rumors all week that he was going to Buffalo to stretch out in an effort to come back at some point as a starter.

Not so surprising is that Oliver Perez won’t go to the minors. He’s dead weight on the roster right now. The word is that he told the Mets that he’s not interested in going to the minors to work out his problems.

Acosta has pitched pretty well for the Mets in 12 games this season. He hasn’t given up a run in his last seven appearances. But he has allowed 50% of his inherited runners to score.
